Friedrich Niggli
Friedrich Niggli (born December 15, 1875 in Aarburg , † November 3, 1959 in Zollikon ) was a Swiss composer and music teacher .
The son of the music historian Arnold Niggli (1843–1927) was a student of Lothar Kempter , Friedrich Hegar and Robert Freund at the Zurich Music School . He then studied composition with Joseph Rheinberger and piano with Heinrich Schwarz at the Academy of Music in Munich . In 1897 he continued his training at the Hoch Conservatory with Bernhard Scholz , Iwan Knorr and James Kwast . Most recently he studied in Rome with Giovanni Sgambati , in Paris with Gabriel Fauré and in Berlin with Heinrich Urban .
In 1900 Niggli returned to Zurich, where he initially taught at the Conservatory and from 1921 to 1936 at the Music Academy piano. With Friedrich Hegar , Hans Huber and Hermann Suter , he founded the Swiss Tonkünstlerverein .
In addition to instrumental works and festival music, Niggli composed numerous choral works and songs, including several song cycles based on Swiss dialect poets such as Adolf Frey ( six songs in Swiss dialect ), Meinrad Lienert ( Schwyzer Liedli ), Josef Reinhart and Ernst Eschmann . In particular, the eight Buechfinkeliedli after Reinhart are performed to this day.
