Lothar Kempter
Lothar Kempter (born February 5, 1844 in Lauingen (Danube) , † July 14, 1918 in Vitznau ) was a German- Swiss composer and conductor .
Life
At the request of his father, the church musician and seminar music teacher Friedrich Kempter from Lauingen, he began studying law at the University of Munich . In 1868 - after his father died - he turned to music. At the Royal Music School in Munich , he studied with the Hans von Bülow Ensemble , Josef Rheinberger composition , Franz Wüllner choral singing and Karl Baermann piano . During his studies he became a member of the AGV Munich in the special houses association .
In 1871 he moved to Magdeburg and became the second conductor of the orchestra at the city theater. In the same year he married the singer Caroline Leonoff . He then gained three more years of orchestral experience at the Strasbourg theater . In 1875 he was hired as Kapellmeister by the Aktientheater in Zurich . In 1879 he became director of the Tonhalle concerts. In 1886 he took over the position of teacher of theory and composition at the Zurich Music School for almost thirty years . In 1892 he received Zurich citizenship. In 1911 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich. From 1875 to 1915 he conducted the opera orchestra and thus made a major contribution to the development of musical life, in particular to the spread and establishment of Richard Wagner's musical dramas in the largest city in Switzerland .
His oeuvre includes stage works, festivals, songs, male choirs, cantatas and some instrumental works.
He found his final resting place in the Rehalp cemetery in Zurich .
