The Rehalp cemetery is a cemetery in the Riesbach district in the south-east of Zurich . It is located in the immediate vicinity of its successor, the Enzenbühl cemetery . The Rehalp cemetery is one of the oldest still operating cemeteries in the city of Zurich.

history

In 1873 the Neumünster cemetery, which had previously been used for the three communities of Hottingen , Hirslanden and Riesbach and was located directly next to the Neumünster Reformed Church, was fully occupied . Therefore the construction of a new one, at that time far outside of the settlement area on the Rehalplocated cemetery, which was opened in 1874. Because the funeral system was transferred from the churches to the political communities in 1874 through a revision of the federal constitution, the political communities of Hottingen, Hirslanden and Riesbach took over the operation of the cemetery from the Neumünster Church from 1876. When these communities became part of the city of Zurich in 1893, it took over the operation of the Rehalp cemetery.

Although the new cemetery was expanded again in 1892, the Rehalp cemetery was already fully occupied in 1900. Initially, the city planned a new Balgrist cemetery to supplement the Rehalp cemetery , but this could not be realized. Finally, the construction and in 1902 the inauguration of the Enzenbühl cemetery took place. Today the two cemeteries Rehalp and Enzenbühl complement each other in terms of grave sites and types of burial, but also in terms of maintenance, operation and administration. In 1919 the Urnenhof was built, which is the landmark of the Rehalp cemetery. The Rehalp cemetery has hardly been changed since 1919. Its entire complex has been a listed building since 2004.

Area and buildings

The triangular cemetery area, situated on a slight hillside, is strictly geometrically structured. It has an old stock of trees. Large plane trees , copper beeches and linden trees are combined with conifers such as false cypresses . The family graves, which are laid out in narrow bands along the outer and inner periphery, significantly shape the image of the cemetery. The only high-rise buildings at the Rehalp cemetery are the service buildings at the main entrance and at the work yard.
