Heinrich Federer was born as the son of Johann Paul Federer , a wood carver and teacher, and Verena born. Nägeli was born in Brienz. He grew up in Sachseln and attended the grammar school in Sarnen from 1881 to 1887 . After another year at the college in Schwyz , he graduated there in 1888 with the Matura . After studying theology in Eichstätt (1888), Lucerne (1888–1890) and Freiburg im Üechtland (1890–1892), he was ordained a priest in 1893 and was then chaplain in Jonschwil .

For health reasons - he suffered from asthma - Federer was transferred to a women's home in Zurich in 1900 and worked as editor- in- chief of the Catholic Neue Zürcher Nachrichten . He had previously been denied admission to the Benedictine monastery in Einsiedeln, as was the case with the Jesuits, as his homosexual inclinations were probably already known within the church .

In the so-called “Stans Pedophile Trial” on September 24, 1902, Federer was sentenced to 24 days imprisonment and a fine of CHF 500 for an alleged, abusive sexual act against the twelve-year-old private student Emil Brunner (1890–1924) entrusted to him for “immoral acts” sentenced. Federer had spent a night in a twin room with his private student in the hotel on the Stanserhorn , where both of them shared a bed at times and they came together. The resident of the neighboring room alerted the hotelier Josef Bucher (son of the hotel builder Franz Josef Bucher ) towards morning and he notified the police in the valley. During the descent with the Stanserhorn cable car , Federer's tender approaches to the student were noticeable. Federer lost his reputation and his job with the newspaper. Two days after his arrest, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) condemned him. In the second instance, on January 15, 1903, the Nidwalden Higher Court reduced the verdict to the offense of "causing public nuisance" and the fine to CHF 300. 20 years later he was rehabilitated in the NZZ by an article by Eduard Korrodi .

In the realistic homeland novel Berge und Menschen , Federer dealt with the topic of legitimate and illegitimate parenthood as a homage to Emil Brunner. With this and the Lachweiler stories , Federer achieved his literary breakthrough in 1911. He became the most famous author in Catholic Switzerland.

Heinrich Federer lived between 1919 and 1928 in the Oberstrass-Quartier at Bolleystrasse 44 in Zurich , where a plaque still commemorates his last years, his grave is in the Zurich Rehalp cemetery (FG 96090). His estate is in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern .

In the second half of the 20th century, Federer's life and work were increasingly forgotten. In 2002, Pirmin Meier made the subject of Federer's trial, his homosexuality and its literary traces again in his historiographical story “The Federer Case”.
