The canton school Obwalden , formerly called Kollegium Sarnen (short: Kollegi Sarnen ), is a public high school in the municipality of Sarnen . Founded in 1752 as a cantonal educational institution, the school was run by the Benedictine convent from 1841 to 1984 . Over the decades, the small educational institute with two professors and 10–20 students has become a cantonal school, where around 400 students are taught by over 50 teachers. The canton school Obwalden is the only public grammar school in the canton of Obwalden, in addition there is also the collegiate school Engelberg and the sports middle school Engelberg , which also lead to the Matura diploma.

history

At the beginning of the 18th century, young people from Obwalden who corresponded to a higher degree mostly attended the Jesuit schools in Lucerne or Solothurn. The beginnings of the Sarnen College go back to 1709. The gold prospector and ex-Jesuit Johann Baptist Dillier (1668–1745) is considered the founder. In the first ten years, the large house on Hofmatt (today's address Rütistrasse 23 ) served as a building for Dillier's boys' seminar.

The Obwalden government had Jakob Singer (1718–1788) build the college of Jakob Singer (1718–1788), which offered teachers and students living and classrooms , from part of the legacy of the seminary master Johann Baptist Dillier (3,400 guilders) and his own funds (1,900 guilders) . The college was opened in 1752 as a Latin school with two clerical professors. Landvogt Melchior Imfeld was appointed as the college administrator . Each student had to pay a school fee of six guilders to the professor, which was available to him as an additional fee. On average, 10–20 students were taught in the college. The first rector and immediately the first professor was Franz Anton Heymann.

In 1817 the Obwalden school regulations were changed, so that from now on six classes were taught in the subjects Latin, geography, history, arithmetic and rhetoric. In 1833, French and Greek were added to the curriculum. Due to the departure of one professor and the unexpected death of the second professor, who was also rector, the school was left without management shortly before the start of the school year in 1840. The canton's government and pastors decided to send a messenger to Friborg and pay three Jesuits in Obwalden. This meant that the college should be continued as a Jesuit school. But it didn't come to that. As a result of the abolition of the monastery in the canton of Aargau, the Benedictines of the Muri-Gries Abbey were also expelled from their ancestral monastery in Muri im Freiamt. The government council of Obwalden subsequently agreed with Abbot Adalbert Regli that the order should send three professors to Sarnen as early as the school year 1841/42. The school was run by the Benedictines for over 100 years. The school's founding date is therefore 1841, and 1752 is also considered the year of foundation.

On October 15, 1868, the inauguration of the newly built Konvikt, which served as a boarding school, took place in the in-house chapel . The first printed annual report is available from the school year 1863/64: six fathers taught 36 secondary school students and 24 high school students at that time. Due to the constant increase in the number of pupils, the large grammar school building with a church in the neo-renaissance style was built in 1890/91, today's old grammar school . The monastery or professors' home was built right next to it. The new collegiate church St. Martin by Ernst Studer, which was inaugurated in 1966, is a testimony to modern sacred architecture . The church was planned according to the needs of the boarding school at that time and the monastic community, so that almost 300 internal students and around thirty Benedictine monks could worship together.

In July 1893, the first Matura exams took place, which all 6 candidates passed. From 1906 the school was called "Kantonale Lehranstalt in Sarnen" and since 1966 it has been a cantonal grammar school.

The college buildings were also damaged in the 1964 earthquake. The students had to move to the military barracks in the Melchtal for some time to attend classes . Until 1970 the college was a boys' school, only then were girls accepted.

With the secularization in the 1970s, a change also took place in the school structure of the Sarnen College. In 1974 the Benedictine Convent gave up the sponsorship of the school, but the school management remained in the hands of a priest until the 1983/84 school year. Since then the school has been run by a secular rectorate. Benedictines continued to teach at the school, however, until the summer of 2013 a priest still worked as a teacher.

In August 2005, the canton of Obwalden was hit by a major flood . This also caused damage to several buildings of the Obwalden Cantonal School. From 2005 to 2011, some of the lessons had to be carried out in makeshift arrangements. After extensive renovation work, it was possible to move into the renovated buildings again in October 2010 (gym) and from March 2011 (school building). (See also the Flood 2005 section .)

Educational offer and school types

The Obwalden Cantonal School is a long-term high school. In addition, entry into the third grade is possible, which corresponds to a short-term high school. The training ends with the Matura .

The long-term high school lasts six years, entry usually takes place after the 6th grade of primary school . The short-term high school lasts four years, entry takes place after the second or third grade of a school of lower secondary level; In Obwalden, this is the orientation school, which in most municipalities is run as an integrative orientation school IOS, less often as a cooperative orientation school KOS.

The Cantonal School Obwalden introduced the new Federal Matura Regulations (MAR) in 1995 and started to introduce Matura work in the 1998/1999 school year. From the introduction of MAR up to the 2011/2012 school year, students were able to choose from the five main subjects Latin, Italian, economics and law, physics and applications of mathematics, and PPP (philosophy / pedagogy / psychology). The supplementary subject could be selected from the subjects of biology, chemistry, geography, music and artistic design and, since the 2010/2011 school year, also on an experimental basis from computer science.

In the 2012/2013 school year, the Italian major was canceled and the dual subject of biology and chemistry was added. The subjects of biology and chemistry were removed from the canon of supplementary subjects and computer science was definitely introduced as a supplementary subject. Philosophy was added as a new supplementary subject. Seven years after the deletion, the focus subject Italian will be offered again from the 2019/2020 school year . It replaces Latin , which will not be continued due to the declining number of participants.

Sports

As a special feature, the canton school offers rowing on the Sarnersee in its sports program , which is in the immediate vicinity of the school.

Former college

The former grammar school and rectorate building was built in 1746–1751 as a baroque secular building according to plans by Jakob Singer. In 1898 the single-axis staircase projection on the west facade was extended. 1988–1989 the building was completely renovated. Since then, the building has been used by the cantonal education and culture department.

Konvikt building

In 1867/1868 the architect Josef Ettlin von Sachseln built the Konvikt according to the plans of Simon Ettlin and P. Martin Kiem. In 1910 the Konvikt was increased. It served as a boarding school under the name "Pensionat Nicolaus von Flüe". In 1988 the building was inventoried as a cultural object of regional importance. Until 2011, the Konvikt of the canton school served as an alternative solution in the event of a lack of space. From spring 2011 to summer 2012, the building was completely renovated for 11.8 million francs and has been available to the Sarnen community school as an upper school center (from the 7th school year) since the 2012/13 school year.

Old high school

Abbot Augustin Grüniger commissioned Sebastian Altmann in 1889 to plan a new high school. The Obwalden government undertook to procure the necessary building materials. Work began in 1890 under the direction of Johann Bittner (Bozen). The inauguration took place in 1891. In 1900 the sanitary facilities were expanded and in 1905 the electrical installation finally took place. In 1927, according to plans by Vinzenz Fischer, the attic was extended to create space for bedrooms and washrooms as well as a monastery library and a drawing room. In 1931/32 two plaster reliefs were created in the entrance hall of the old grammar school by Payer & Wipplinger. They show Saint Benedict of Nursia and Niklaus von Flüe . In 1964 the building was damaged by an earthquake. 1991–1992 it was completely restored. In addition to the classrooms, the building also contains an auditorium (formerly built as a college church) and a theater hall. In addition to the canton school, the Sarnen school also uses classrooms in the old grammar school.

The old grammar school (neo-renaissance 1890) and the former college (baroque secular building 1746) are classified as cultural assets of regional importance.

New high school

The new grammar school including the adjoining triple gymnasium was opened in April 1979.

2005 flood

When the Alpine floods in 2005 , Lake Sarnen overflowed its banks and caused great damage in Sarnen. The canton school was also flooded. Both the classroom and the gymnasium of the “New Gymnasium”, which opened in 1979, were so badly damaged that they had to be completely renovated. A container settlement was built for teaching. The gyms could no longer be used either. An air dome was provisionally built for gymnastics lessons and a weight room was set up in the nurses' house.

The renovation of the school building was delayed, and so the school had to live from 2006 to spring 2011 with the distribution of the school hours between the old grammar school, the Konvikt and the temporary air dome and container estate. In November 2007, 400 students demonstrated for a new building instead of the planned renovation of the school building.

Total renovation and expansion

The entire building complex had to be completely renovated. At the same time, the space was expanded. The building designed by the architects Meyer Gadient is built according to the Minergie standard. On the roof there is both a solar system for hot water preparation and a photovoltaic system for electricity production. The “Fragrance Notes” project by Sachsler artist Anna-Sabina Zürrer was implemented as art in architecture, and it spreads various scents in the school building.

From March 2011, the classrooms in the renovated new grammar school could be used again. In total, the renovated and expanded canton school has around 10,000 square meters of 24 classrooms, 4 group rooms, a teacher's room, a library and numerous offices. The building is designed for 24 classes, the construction took around one and a half years and cost around 39 million francs. The inauguration was celebrated on May 14, 2011 with a school festival. Since then, lessons at the cantonal school have taken place exclusively in the new and old grammar school; the Konvikt building is no longer used by the canton school.

Boarding school

From 1868 to 2000, the school also had a boarding school, which was also run by the Benedictines. This boarding school for boys was housed in the Konvikt building under the name "Pensionat Nicolaus von Flüe", and other rooms were also used at times, such as the former college, the attic of the old grammar school and the new building from the 1970s (today the rowing center of the Swiss Rowing Association).

During the same period (1868–1998) the Benedictine nuns maintained a boarding school for girls in Melchtal Abbey . There was no grammar school for the girls there; the sisters maintained a seminar for teachers, a peasant school and a secondary school in Melchtal.

theatre

The school can look back on a long theater tradition. Early performances included: "Joseph", opera in three acts (1884), "Jägerlatein", operetta in three acts (1898), "Preciosa", romantic drama in four acts (1900) and "Der Freischütz", romantic opera in three acts (1903). The school theater founded by Heinrich Federer's father flourished again in the 1970s and 1980s under the rectorate of Leo Ettlin and the direction of Adrian Hossli . Since then, the Kollegitheater Sarnen has put on a play every year. The entire production is carried out only by students and teachers from the cantonal school. The theater performances take place in the school's own theater hall in the old grammar school.

Student organizations

The student council represents and represents the student body. Each student can stand up for the student council elections in January. In the following event, in which every pupil of the Cantonal School Obwalden can participate, the pupil council members are elected by the pupils. The student council organizes various events such as B. a rose sale on Valentine's Day, a meal together before the Christmas holidays and the annual gymnastics festival.

In October 2013 the alumni association Friends of the Sarnen College was founded.

The grammar school student association GV Subsilvania Sarnen was founded in 1860 as the Sarner section of the Swiss student association . After difficult times, the section was reactivated in 2006.

canteen

Between September 2007 and July 2011 the “Zämä Z Mittag” association offered warm lunch at the school. A catering company has been running the cafeteria since August 2011.
