Adalbert Wirz (born June 16, 1848 in Sarnen ; † September 14, 1925 there ) was a Swiss politician ( Catholic-Conservative ), judge and editor .

biography

Adalbert Wirz was the younger brother of Theodor Wirz , the son of Franz Wirz , nephew of Simon Ettlin and great-nephew of Nikolaus Hermann . All four were - like him - Landammans of the canton of Obwalden .

Wirz visited the college in Sarnen and the college St. Michael in Freiburg . He then completed a law degree in Freiburg , Basel , Zurich and Heidelberg .

Wirz married Rosalia Ettlin in 1879, the daughter of Simon Ettlin .

From 1876 to 1901 Wirz was President of the Civil Court and from 1910 to 1925 President of the Cantonal High Court. He also worked as a substitute at the Federal Supreme Court from 1910 to 1918 .

From 1885 to 1925 Wirz was a member of the Obwalden Cantonal Council , which he chaired in 1886 and 1912. He was a member of the government of the canton of Obwalden from 1901 to 1910. In 1902, 1904, 1906 and 1908 he held the office of Landammann . The Council of States , in which he sat from 1902 to 1925, was chaired by the Catholic-Conservative politician in 1906.

Wirz was a regular employee and from 1879 to 1882 editor of the Obwalden Volksfreund . From 1885 to 1892 he was President of the Swiss Pius Association and from 1899 to 1902 of the Swiss Catholic Association. From 1912 to 1917 Wirz was the first president of the Swiss Conservative People's Party . He also presided over the International Catholic Union in 1917/1918.

Wirz was a knight of the papal order of Pius and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Freiburg in 1918 .
