Philipp Stähelin (born April 2, 1944 in Frauenfeld ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ). He represented the Canton of Thurgau from 1999 to 2011 as a Council of States .

Life

Stähelin studied law at the University of Freiburg , was admitted to the bar in 1973 and works as a lawyer (Dr. iur.) In a law firm in his home town of Frauenfeld. Among other things, Stähelin is a member of the boards of directors of Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken AG and Spital Thurgau AG. He is married and has five children.

He started his political career in 1975 as a councilor for the city of Frauenfeld, of which he was a member until 1976. From 1976 to 1984 he was state clerk for the canton of Thurgau . In 1989 Stähelin was elected to the government council and was district president in 1993 and 1997. As a government councilor, he headed the finance, forestry and military departments and the finance and social affairs department. In the 1999 elections he was elected to the Council of States together with Hermann Bürgi , and in 2000 he finally resigned as a member of the government. In January 2011, Stähelin and Bürgi announced his resignation at the end of 2011.

Stähelin was President of CVP Switzerland from 2001 to 2004. He gave up his post after the Federal Council elections , in which Ruth Metzler was no longer re-elected.
