Adalbert Durrer (born November 17, 1950 in Alpnach ; † April 19, 2008 ) was a Swiss politician ( CVP ).

Political career

Durrer began his political career at the age of 28 years when he was in the 1978 municipal council was elected by Alpnach. Four years later he became the mayor elected this community. At the same time, he was a member of the Obwalden Cantonal Council from 1981 to 1986 . This was followed by ten years in the government council from 1986 to 1996 , which he chaired as Landammann in 1993/94 and 1995/96 .

In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 1995 , Durrer was elected to the Swiss National Council, of which he was a member from December 4, 1995 to October 5, 2001. From 1997 to May 2001 he was President of CVP Switzerland. In March 1999, during his tenure as CVP President, Durrer was one of five official candidates to succeed the resigned Federal Councilor Flavio Cotti . However, Durrer was eliminated in the fourth ballot . He submitted his resignation as a member of the National Council on October 5, 2001, and Adriano Imfeld took over .

Durrer was for the impunity of cannabis use and against legal equality for homosexual couples. Although the CVP itself long supported Switzerland's accession to the European Union , Durrer was an opponent of accession: "If member states are not sovereign to determine their governments alone within the framework of international law, I can no longer support accession."

Work and private life

The former lawyer and notary Adalbert Durrer worked as a director at UBS after his political retirement . He was married. Durrer died on April 19, 2008 after a serious illness.
