After completing the compulsory schooling in Merenschwand and Muri , she attended the canton school in Wohlen . She studied law at the University of Zurich , made study visits to Paris and Calgary and received the title lic. iur. In 1991 she was admitted to the bar and worked as a lawyer in Wohlen and Muri until 2006. On New Year's Eve 1999 she married the chemist Roland Hausin, who holds a leading position at Dow Europe GmbH, which is part of the chemical group Dow Chemical .
Her political career began in 1993 when she was elected school councilor for the Muri district. In 1997 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau. She quickly became known through these activities. In 1999 she ran for both the National Council and the Council of States . Her election campaign caused a sensation, as the then party secretary of the CVP Aargau, Reto Nause , had thousands of shower sachets printed with her portrait and distributed. The Aargauer Zeitung created the headline “Showers with Doris”, which became an unofficial campaign slogan. Although it was not enough for the election to the Council of States, Leuthard achieved one of the best results in the entire canton in the election to the National Council.
In 2000 she gave up her mandates as school councilor and councilor and became vice-president of both the cantonal party and CVP Switzerland. In the National Council she was a member of the Commission for Economy and Taxes.
