Vanderbijlpark is a city in Gauteng Province in South Africa . It is located on the Vaal River , extends over an area of ​​233 square kilometers and is at an altitude of 1468 meters above sea level. Vanderbijlpark is the seat of the municipality of Emfuleni .

Together with the neighboring cities of Vereeniging and Sasolburg , Vanderbijlpark forms the so-called “Vaal Triangle”, one of the largest industrial areas in South Africa. Established in 1947, Vanderbijlpark Engineering Corporation (vecor), today SARCO, built a heavy industry plant in the city, which established in 2007/08 22,000 tons of steel products.

The townships Boipatong , Bophelong , Sebokeng and Sharpeville are close to the city.

history

The city was founded in 1920 by Hendrik van der Bijl , a young scientist . Van der Bijl had returned to his home country at the invitation of then Prime Minister Jan Smuts to work as a technical advisor to the government and to set up an industrial area.

education

There are 16 primary and 8 secondary schools in Vanderbijlpark . The Technical University of Vaal is based in the city. In addition, the North-West University maintains a campus responsible for the Vaal Triangle in the city.

Demographics

In 2001 Vanderbijlpark had 80,201 inhabitants, of which 70.2% were white , 28.7% were black African , 0.8% of Asian origin and 0.4% were colored . In 2011, 95,840 people lived in the city.
