history

Sebokeng, which means "meeting place" in the Sesotho language , was founded as a township by the apartheid government of the time in 1965 to accommodate black Africans who were employed in the nearby industrial area of the "Vaal Triangle". Many simple houses were built for this purpose. In 1984 there were violent clashes between security forces and residents who demonstrated because of high rents and operating costs, organized a school boycott and went on strike. 2,300 demonstrators were arrested during these protests. The demonstrations continued, however, and as a result of the sometimes brutal police action, a total of 600 demonstrators were killed by the end of September 1985. A detailed description of the conditions at that time in the townships of Evaton and Sebokeng was written by the priest Patrick Noonan. In January 1991, 39 people lost their lives during a memorial service for a comrade and member of the ANC when armed attackers suddenly appeared when they threw a hand grenade into the mourning community. In 1994 a stable community was established in Sebokeng, which was divided into 21 zones. In the 2004/2005 financial year, the government started a program to rehabilitate zones 11, 14 and 17.
