Meyerton is a town in the district Sedibeng in the province of Gauteng in South Africa and is the seat of the municipality of Midvaal Local Municipality . In 2011 the population was 55,283.
geography
Meyerton is about 40 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg . In the southwest, a from the cities includes Vereeniging , Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg formed industrial area, "Vaal Triangle" ( Vaal Triangle ) on. The regional road R59 runs through the city. The river Vaal flows about ten kilometers away in the south.
Sometimes Meyerton is incorrectly named as the location of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls , which is located three kilometers away in Henley-on-Klip and was founded in 2007 on the initiative of Oprah Winfrey .
history
Johannes Petrus Meyer, an officer and prospector, founded the city in 1891 in hopes of finding gold in the area . In his honor she was named Meyerton.
Since 1994 Meyerton has been the seat of the local government of Midvaal.
Demographic data
The population of 24,215 people determined in 2001 is made up as follows: 51.65% black Africans , 42.31% white , 0.90% colored and 0.14% Asian . The main language at this time was Afrikaans with 43.68%, followed by Sesotho with 30.43%, isiZulu with 8.68%, isiXhosa with 7.01%, English with 5.51% and other languages with 4.69%.
