Accused - A Question of Guilt is a British TV anthology series directed by Jimmy McGovern . Since November 15, 2010, two seasons have been broadcast on BBC One . Each episode follows a different person awaiting judgment in court and tells the story of how the trial came about. Well-known actors and actresses such as Christopher Eccleston , Benjamin Smith , Juliet Stevenson , Andy Serkis , Marc Warren , Naomie Harris , Sean Bean and Anne-Marie Duff star in the main roles of the individual episodes .
The series follows earlier McGovern drama series such as The Street and Moving On . After his series The Street was discontinued in 2009 , McGovern formed RSJ Films to produce independent dramas, which eventually became the anthology series Accused . The scripts are by McGovern, Danny Brocklehurst and Alice Nutter and were filmed in Manchester. In 2011 the series won an International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series.
First season
The series was commissioned by Jay Hunt and Ben Stephenson and announced in May 2010. Each episode revolves around a different person who is brought to justice. On their way to the dock, the events that led to the crime are shown and the audience is asked the "question" of whether or not the accused should be found guilty.
McGovern on the series:
“In the time it takes to climb the steps to the court we tell the story of how the accused came to be here. We see the crime and we see the punishment. Nothing else. No police procedure, thanks very much, no coppers striding along corridors with coats flapping. Just crime and punishment - the two things that matter most in any crime drama. "
McGovern was the lead writer on the series, with co-writers Alice Nutter, Danny Brocklehurst and Esther Wilson for episodes 3 through 5. Directed by David Blair (episodes 1, 2, 5 and 6) and Richard Laxton (episodes 3 and 4), while RSJ Films took over production. Filming for the series took place around Manchester between May and August 2010.
Some of the cast was announced directly with the series: Christopher Eccleston and Pooky Quesnel in "Willy's Story," Mackenzie Crook, Robert Pugh, Benjamin Smith, and Ben Batt in "Frankie's Story". In June it was announced that Juliet Stevenson and Peter Capaldi would star in "Helen's Story" and Andy Serkis in "Liam's Story". Naomie Harris was featured in "Alison's Story" in July and Marc Warren in "Kenny's Story" in August.
Second season
On February 24, 2011, BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson announced that Accused would be renewed for a four-episode second season that would air in 2012. Despite the relatively small number of viewers from the first season, those responsible saw enough potential to find a wider audience in the second season.
Filming for the first two episodes of the second season began in November 2011. The new cast for these episodes included Anne-Marie Duff, Olivia Colman, Robert Sheehan, Joe Dempsie, Sheridan Smith, Paul Popplewell and comedian John Bishop. The first episode, starring Colman and Duff, was written by McGovern and Carol Cullington, while the credits for the second episode (starring Sheehan, Bishop and Smith) return to Daniel Brocklehurst and McGovern.
In January 2012, it was confirmed that Anna Maxwell Martin would add to the cast for the second episode. It was also announced that Sean Bean would star as "an English teacher with a twisted alter ego" (playing a transgender person) in the episode "Tracie's Story" alongside Stephen Graham .
The first episode of season 2 aired on August 14, 2012 after a large-scale advertising campaign. The last episode of the series contains a different concept than that of the previous episodes: There is no new accused in court, but former accused (Jake, Stephen, Stephen father and the judge) from previous episodes can be seen who are responsible for the story play a significant role in the episode.
Charisma
The first season of six episodes was first broadcast from November 15 to December 20, 2010 on BBC One. The four episodes of the second season aired from August 14 to September 4, 2012.
In February, Sky announced the broadcast of the series on the pay-TV channel Sky Atlantic HD . The first season was there from April 4 to May 9, 2013 to see. The second season was broadcast directly afterwards from May 16 to June 6, 2013.
