Andrew Clement "Andy" Serkis (born April 20, 1964 in Ruislip Manor , Middlesex ) is a British actor and director. He became famous for his portrayal of Gollum / Sméagol in the film series The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by director Peter Jackson . In King Kong (2005) Serkis served the giant ape as a movement model, in Planet of the Apes: Prevolution (2011), Planet of the Apes: Revolution (2014) and Planet of the Apes: Survival (2017) the chimpanzee Caesar.

Serkis was born in Ruislip Manor in the UK and grew up there with his parents Lylie (née Weech) and Clement Serkis. His father is an Iraqi of Armenian descent. After leaving school, he attended Lancaster University , where he studied independent studies and was involved in the university's theater group. Career

Serkis has appeared in several film roles since the late 1990s. But he only achieved wider fame through his portrayal of Gollum / Sméagol in the 2001 to 2003 film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings .
