production

Even before Venom was released , Tom Hardy confirmed that his contract with Sony comprised a total of three films, which would make a sequel very likely if the first film was successful. After Venom grossed more than 855 million US dollars at the international box office, but the reviews of the critics were very poor, Kelly Marcel was hired as a screenwriter and executive producer in January 2019 . At the same time it was announced that Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Williams will re-record their roles from the first part and that Amy Pascal , Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will act as producers. This trio was later joined by producer Hutch Parker . Since the director of the first part, Ruben Fleischer , was not able to participate in the sequel due to his work on Zombieland: Double holds better , Sony held talks with possible successors for the directing position, including Andy Serkis , Travis Knight and Rupert Wyatt . In August 2019, Serkis finally confirmed that he had been hired as a director. In one of his first interviews after the engagement, Serkis said he was delighted to be working directly with Hardy, whom he valued and who was very involved in the writing process, for the first time. He also has “some very clear ideas” for the film, such as the visual direction. In September 2019, Reid Scott's return became public. In the following month, Naomie Harris was also cast for the role of Shriek , an opponent of Spider-Man and the girlfriend of Cletus Kasady in the comics . The last known thing was Stephen Graham's involvement in an as yet unknown role in December 2019 .

Filming began on November 15, 2019 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden under the working title Fillmore . The three - time Oscar-winning Robert Richardson acted as cameraman . Recordings were made in January 2020 on the London South Bank University campus . After more than 40 days of shooting, the part of the shooting planned for the United Kingdom was completed on February 8, 2020. A little later, further filming took place in San Francisco .

The film was originally scheduled to hit German cinemas on October 1, 2020, and US cinemas the following day. In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , in April 2020, in addition to the original title Venom: Let There Be Carnage , the postponement of the US start date to June 25, 2021 became known.

Due to the great financial success of films with an R rating such as Deadpool , Logan - The Wolverine or Joker , according to producer Matt Tolmach, in principle, you have the option of considering this age rating for the sequel. However, one does not want to force anything, but rather make a decision that fits the story.
