action

Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and Little Rock have grown into one real family since they first met . Columbus and Wichita are now a couple and Tallahassee is like a surrogate father to Little Rock. Together they fight their way into the White House surrounded by zombies, dividing the creatures into three categories: the underexposed Homers , the intelligent hawkings and the fast ninjas . After some time in the former seat of government, where the group has set up camp, Columbus Wichita proposes marriage to the Hope diamond , which, to his surprise, she does not immediately accept. At the same time, Little Rock is frustrated by the fact that due to the lack of young group members, they may never have a relationship. The sisters disappear one night, which puts Columbus in an emotionally troubled state for several weeks. When he and Tallahassee pick up the simple-minded Madison in a shopping mall a little later, a romance develops between him and the new girl. The following night, however, Wichita returns surprisingly and tells her former companions that she and Little Rock have taken the hitchhiker Berkeley with them and that her sister has decided to go to Graceland with the musician and pacifist . Columbus, Tallahassee and Wichita then decide to follow them and protect them from possible threats along the way, involuntarily having to take Madison with them.

During a stop on the highway, where Tallahassee wants to swap the minivan for a larger vehicle, the troops are caught in a zombie ambush, in which they make contact with the T-800 for the first time, a zombie that is physically much stronger and heavier kill is. Shortly afterwards, Madison shows the first signs of infection with the zombie virus, which is why Columbus shoots her in the forest. After another, long drive, the trio finally reaches Graceland, where the Nevada resident informs them that Little Rock and Berkeley moved on a few days ago. Afterwards, the survivors Albuquerque and Flagstaff, who are reminiscent of Tallahassee and Columbus in terms of their appearance and their character traits, arrive at Nevada. Since they were followed by a group of T-800s, both take care of the attackers, but are bitten and also mutate into zombies, which is why Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and Nevada kill the two in teamwork. The trio then makes their way to Babylon, a zombie and weapon-free small community, where Little Rock and Berkeley are suspected. On the way there, they meet Madison again, who was not shot by Columbus and whose mutation was merely an allergic reaction to nuts. When the four reach Babylon, they can reunite the sisters.

But the good mood evaporates when Tallahassee sees hundreds of T-800s approaching Babylon. Therefore, the fellow campaigners prepare for the attack and later can temporarily hold back the zombies by fire, but the plan to blow them up using biofuel fails. Only at the last second are Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and Little Rock saved by the monster truck- driving Nevada. Tallahassee can lure the undead onto the roof of the main building of Babylon and eventually make them jump off the roof to their death because he was able to hold onto a hook over the abyss. Wichita then accepts Columbus' marriage proposal, Tallahassee and Nevada grow closer, and Madison and Berkeley develop feelings for each other after Little Rock has distanced themselves from him.

In a post-credits scene is to see how Bill Murray on the day of the virus outbreak during a press conference at 3 Garfield kill multiple zombies.

production

In July 2018 it was officially confirmed that a sequel to the surprise hit Zombieland would come. At the same time, the return of Ruben Fleischer in the director's chair, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick as screenwriters, Gavin Polone as producer and the four main actors of the first part became known. When working out the script, Reese and Wernick wanted to make sure not to repeat the first part, but rather to tell an original and independent story in addition to small references. Originally, a sequel should be worked on shortly after the publication of the first part. However, since the two screenwriters Reese and Wernick began working on Deadpool in early 2010 , the production team had to wait until they had finished their work on the comic book adaptation. The first details of the action were also announced in July 2018. The four main characters were supposed to meet new zombie species and other survivors while also facing the "growing pain of their vicious, transitional family". In November 2018, the participation of Zoey Deutch as Madison , in whom Columbus is said to be interested, and Avan Jogia as Berkeley in the film became public. In addition to Bill Murray , Dan Aykroyd should also have an appearance in the film. The scene planned for him, in which Harold Ramis , Ernie Hudson and Joe Pesci should also be seen, was ultimately not implemented, among other things because Ramis passed away in 2014. At the end of January 2019, in addition to the first poster, the official title of the sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap , was revealed. At the same time it was announced that Rosario Dawson was signed as Nevada . The next month, Thomas Middleditch and Luke Wilson were hired for the roles of Flagstaff and Albuquerque . Thus, all nine essential figures bear the name of a US city or state.

Filming began in Atlanta on January 28, 2019 . From February 4 to 10, 2019, the film was shot in Macon . This was followed by recordings in Decatur on February 13 , one day later near the Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, from February 15 to 17 in Newnan , then again at Pinewood Studios, on February 20 at the exhibition center in Coweta County and February 22-23 in downtown Jackson . On March 12, recordings were made near the Tom Moreland Interchange motorway junction on the outskirts of Atlanta in a former, abandoned presidential hotel. Two days later the film was shot near Fulton County Airport in Fulton County . Between March 23 and 26, parts of the GA-20 highway in Hampton were closed for filming before further recordings were made in the former presidential hotel in Atlanta that same day. Filming finally ended at the end of March.

An English-language trailer was released on July 25, 2019. At the beginning of August 2019, a German-language film poster was published that confirmed the German title Zombieland 2: Double holds better . The subtitle refers both to the fourth zombie rule of Columbus and to the protagonists' doppelgangers that appear in the film. The German trailer followed on August 13, 2019, with the number 2 omitted in the film title. A second long trailer followed on October 7, 2019. The film was originally scheduled to be released in US theaters on October 11, 2019, exactly ten years after its predecessor was released, and in German theaters on November 21, 2019. The US theatrical release was later postponed one week to October 18, 2019. Already on October 16, Zombieland: Double is Better at the Chicago International Film Festival and on the following day at the Salem Horror Fest in Salem . The film has been in cinemas in Germany since November 7, 2019.

Zombieland: Twice is Better is available digitally in the United States since December 24, 2019 and was also released on DVD and Blu-ray on January 21, 2020 . In Germany, the film was released for home theater on March 19, 2020.

reception

Age rating

In the United States, the MPAA gave the film an R rating for its bloody violence, drugs, sexual content, and language . In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK for people aged 16 and over. The reason for the release states that the film is clearly recognizable as an exaggerated and unrealistic mixture of zombie comedy and end-of-life film. The fighting scenes, in which the zombies are often drastically killed, are reminiscent of computer games in their stylized aesthetics. This makes it easier for young people aged 16 and over to maintain an emotional distance. In addition, numerous humorous moments offer viewers 16 and over the opportunity to relieve the strain. The film also makes it clear that the violence is not directed against people. The protagonists also do not enjoy killing, but act in self-defense.

Reviews

Initial reviews after the premiere were mostly positive, although it was noted that the original cast still had the same chemistry as ten years ago. By consensus, they praise the good humor, the action and the emerging nostalgia .

The film was able to convince 68% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 55 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic.

John DeFore from the Hollywood Reporter wrote about Zombieland: Double is better overall positive. So the film manages to introduce some new elements into the post-apocalyptic world that would fit really well with the overall picture of the film; other elements, such as the love affair between Columbus and Wichita , on the other hand, should have been made a subject of the character development since the last film. DeFore particularly positively highlights Madison , played by Zoey Deutch , who, together with Woody Harrelson's Tallahassee, is responsible for almost the entire joke of the film. Although is Madison an exaggerated caricature, but Deutch manage to bring them to life, to achieve laughs for laughs and to provide good templates for punch lines of Harrelson. However, hardly any current political jokes are made, even though the White House is also a place of action at times , as they simply did not fit into the scenario. During the subsequent road trip, however, there are many nice surprises, for example around Elvis . DeFore judges differently about the secondary characters appearing: while the characters of Thomas Middleditch and Luke Wilson are only supposed to cause laughter, Rosario Dawson makes a lot more of her role than would be intended in the script by bringing something human into the world. The finale, on the other hand, is too similar to that of the previous film, although it takes place in an even more unrealistic location, whereby the previous cleverness of the film is lost, so that DeFore does not need a further sequel.

Variety's Peter Debruge, however, is much more critical of the film. This is how Zombieland does it: It is better to keep the same mistakes as the first part and surprise with questionable messages. Women are only love interests for their male co-stars, have a stereotypical representation like with Madison or shine exclusively with their sex appeal, instead of focusing on their personality like with Nevada . In addition, according to Debruge, the film conveys a misrepresentation of violence: the violence is a recurring joke in the sequel, whereby the joyful mass murders are more of a “creepy by-product of the genre”. Although the authors did a good job and wrote funny punchlines, for example changing gags from Shaun of the Dead , they would at the same time convey the message that a single life is worth nothing. This, coupled with jokes about pacifism, does not fit into the current world situation, according to Debruge.

Linn Rietze from n-tv comes to a similar assessment , for whom the film has too many parallels to its predecessor. For them one would have simply used the age-old recipe for sequels: "Take the old script, add a few dull changes, pick up old-fashioned jokes [and] mix them up with new, cool slogans [...]." new minor characters do not really convince and only serve to advance the "lame plot". Only a few splatter sequences and the main cast could convince Rietze.

For Matt Goldberg of Collider.com, however , the sequel is a collection of silly gags in a positive sense. A second part never felt necessary, but in the end the film was a welcome relapse into the "dying kind of studio comedies" with no modern problems which makes the sequel feel like a 2009 movie. The scriptwriters had again managed to write good jokes as well as adorable characters, which were brought to the screen in an appropriate manner by director Ruben Fleischer . Since the predecessor “didn't cast a long shadow”, it was made possible for those in charge in Zombieland: It's better to just implement a few crazy and meaningless ideas that would no longer play a role in the further course of the plot, but would be great fun. On a negative note, Goldberg emphasizes that Little Rock , embodied by Abigail Breslin , would hardly have a use again and that the feeling of solidarity from the first part was discarded. In conclusion, he draws that the comedy works far better than it should, but at the same time is just a “good companion of the original” without finding a new approach.

Gross profit

On the US opening weekend, Zombieland: Double Holds Better was third in the cinema charts with a turnover of 26.7 million US dollars , but did not reach the top 3 in the following weeks. With a budget of 42 million US dollars, worldwide income from cinema screenings is 122.81 million US dollars, of which the film grossed 73.12 million in North America alone. In Germany, the film had 490,761 cinema-goers, through which it was able to generate 4.17 million euros.

continuation

Director Ruben Fleischer commented on a possible sequel, saying that they would first wait for the audience's reactions to the film to see if the fans even want a third part. He and the actors would have had a lot of fun on the set and could in principle imagine another film. Emma Stone is said to have had the idea to follow the release rhythm of releasing a new film every ten years.
