Extras in a zombie movie while filming Meat Market 3 (2006)

The zombie film is a subgenre of the horror film . Dealing with the death and disintegration of the human body and the associated fear that the deceased would return to the circle of the living has exercised a special fascination since the beginning of human cultural history, which in the zombie film is adapted to current political and social events again and again has been newly recorded and processed. Living or resuscitated dead or undead have been portrayed in film since 1910 and are now depicted in different interpretations.

Position within the horror film

Alignments of the horror film

The essence of the horror film is the explicitly represented threat to human existence through total annihilation and has two fundamental directions:

  • the horror ends with the biological death of the threat: This direction includes horror films, which are more realistic and overlap with genres such as crime fiction or animal films, e.g. B. serial killer or animal horror films ( Psycho , Jaws ).
  • the horror begins with the biological death of a threat: This direction mainly includes horror films that are more metaphysical, such as the ghost and / or curse films (e.g. The Mummy , Poltergeist , The Grudge ).

Special case of the undead film

The films of the undead , which in addition to the zombie film also include the mummy film, are a special case. The early filmmakers put the zombie film in the tradition of ghost hauntings and voodoos and initially assigned it a place in the second direction. In more recent times, the filmmakers redefined the undead and accepted biological issues such as infections with diseases as the reason for a threatening transformation and created the infected film . In doing so, they split the undead film itself into two orientations, because, strictly speaking, the zombie film is still in the lower orientation, while the variant of the infected film is in the upper orientation and thus overlaps with other genres such as that of the disease film (e.g. outbreak - Silent Killer ) and mutant films like The Hills Have Eyes . In analogy to this, by the way, among vampire films that fall into the undead genre ( Twilight - Bite at Dawn is probably not even a horror film at all), the infected or mutant variants (e.g. Daybreakers or Underworld ) are increasingly found .

aesthetics

Of all the variations of the undead film, the zombie film, together with the mummy film, is one of the ones that allow the greatest visual bandwidth in the cinematic imagery, since none of the other types of undead film makes such a multitude of shocking optical effects on the human body possible as this subgenre. The various degrees of decomposition give the filmmakers the opportunity to play with the horror and disgust of the audience at the relentlessly exposed decay of the human body. Both the vampire film and the infected film reach their limits in the visual implementation of physical decay as an end in itself. Although Gore effects also occur in many productions , the horror in these subgenres is always geared towards the active action of the protagonists and not the passive decay as a frightening unique selling point that, strictly speaking, makes an action superfluous. The ghost film alone can compete with the zombie film in terms of the freedom to display visual effects. But since ghost films always protrude into the metaphysical, the filmmakers usually have to deal with more content in order not to drift into the fairytale. In ghost films, despite all the horror that can be represented, the visual appearance of the ghost is also subordinated to the horror of its action and goals . In the special case of the mummy film, the zombie theme is tied to its own, mostly historicizing subtext and, unlike the classic zombie film, could not be detached from its metaphysical context. The mummy film has therefore not been able to assert itself as a horror film as the classic zombie film and has hardly developed thematically or visually since its inception. Instead, in contemporary interpretations of the subject, such as in the film The Mummy from 1999, it drifted into the realm of adventure, if not comedy films, in which one's own clichés are perpetuated as ironic quotations rather than as a real horror element used.

Development of the zombie film

The first confrontations with the resuscitated dead in the early horror films were shaped by literary models, as the subject has been a topic of primal human fear for centuries and the early filmmakers initially adhered to classic guidelines.

Reanimated dead in the film

One of the first films to usher in the genre was Frankenstein from 1910. In 1920 Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari , who brought another interpretation of the subject into play. In these early films, the manipulation of humans through uncontrolled science was thematized. So the early undead films were in a large thematic context together with films like Metropolis from 1927. Metropolis also has a megalomaniac scientist as a subject who creates an artificial human and tries to manipulate an enslaved human army, which through work and Machines is suppressed. Fritz Lang's film quotes heavily from the undead theme, as he lets the scientist create his "Maria" as a living image of a deceased person, but interprets her as a robot that wears an undefined human shell. As a result, he moved the character away from the pure zombie in terms of content , but thereby laid the foundation for science fiction films in which human bodies are taken possession of or imitated by foreign powers in order to manipulate and carry out terror, as in the Terminator series or the film adaptations of Jack Finney's novel The Body Eaters . This sub-genre of science fiction shows strong overlaps with the zombie film due to its aesthetic possibilities and interpretations. All of these early films later shaped their own genres and subgenres, but this is where their common root lies. Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror from 1922 stood alone as a metaphysical undead film. Here, however, the later split into realistic and fantastic orientation of the undead film becomes evident.

The first classic zombie

The first zombies in the film that were closest to the classic image were mainly shaped by the cliché of the voodoo cult. The zombies were transformed people, but also dead people who were under the influence of a magician. They were mostly slow to move and were used to do low work. The magician's motive was mostly revenge. The depiction of the zombies in the film White Zombie (1932) was particularly influential .

Another type of zombie film was created by the alleged UFO sightings in the United States and the emergence of the science fiction film . Here the zombies were puppets controlled by aliens who were supposed to prepare the earth for an invasion. The 12-part mini-series Zombies of the Stratosphere was formative . Whether these invasion films belong to the zombie film chronology is controversial in the specialist press.

If possible, the German title is given. If the film has not been published in German-speaking countries, the title is shown in italics.

However, these early zombie films did not establish their own subgenre.

1968 to 1977

With the appearance of The Night of the Living Dead in 1968, the image of the zombie changed dramatically. The film founded the subgenre zombie film as it is understood today. The zombie became a synonym for a man-eating undead, driven solely by its hunger for human flesh. With a few exceptions (for example Braindead and the Re-Animator series) the zombie can only be destroyed if its brain is irreparably damaged. Zombies are now rarely created by magic, but by radioactive contamination , nuclear war or human error.

The Spanish horror film was also able to set important accents with the Riding Leichen film series by Amando de Ossorio . The zombies here are the corpses of the legendary Knights Templar who want to take revenge for their murder.

1978 to 1991

In 1978, George A. Romero's classic Zombie was created and triggered an unprecedented wave of imitators and epigones. It was supposed to be the last film in Romero's zombie series that had a genre-defining effect. In the 1980s, a variety of horror comedies were also created that played with the zombie cliché. The Return of the Living Dead series must be mentioned here. In the 1990s, the zombie film lost more and more importance. But it remained important, especially in the German amateur and independent sector (for example with Andreas Schnaas and Olaf Ittenbach ).

1992 to 2001

The New Zealand director Peter Jackson revolutionized the zombie film genre with his third work Braindead , published in 1992 . The horror comedy with a large number of splatter effects marked the beginning of a new generation of horror comedies. In the German-speaking countries in particular, the work influenced several amateur filmmakers such as Andreas Schnaas and Olaf Ittenbach . New impulses also came from Japan, whereby the mixing of comedy and splatter was in the foreground.

2002 to 2009

Films like 28 Days Later and the remake Dawn of the Dead reoriented the genre. A realistic scenario came to the fore. 28 Days later also split the genre into two branches. The traditional branch continued to treat the zombie as a resuscitated dead, which must be actively fought and can no longer return to the world of the living, the new branch referred to more realistic scenarios of an infection that mutate living people into insane beasts, but definitely the Considered the possibility of immunity or even healing and the associated return to the circle of civilization. The main difference is that the infected , unlike the undead , can succumb to a natural death (freeze, suffocate, bleed to death, drown, starve or thirst) even without actively fighting humans , so that, unlike in the traditional genre, the possibility of one for the first time passive control could be demonstrated.

The new branch was followed by many primarily European productions such as the Spanish [● REC] or the German battering ram . The new branch gave the filmmakers the opportunity to re-explore the genre because, unlike traditional productions, it enables more depth of content and more difficult stories apart from pure gore . Dealing with character-changing pandemics as a threat to human civilization is not in itself new. Richard Matheson already addressed this scenario in his novel I am a legend . The multiple film adaptations of his work such as The Omega Man all referred to the topic, only in the earliest film adaptations a reference was made to vampirism , as the infected retain a certain consciousness and are able, despite all aggression against humanity, to create their own To create social networks and even a universe of its own, while in the classic undead and Boyle universe all civilization falls apart with disease.

In remakes such as I Am Legend , the infected are more likely to be equated with the Danny Boyle infected, both visually and in behavior, but here, too, the issue of consciousness remains, even if only rudimentary. Romero alone dealt with the zombie as an independent individual and brought the personality of the undead into the foreground, so in Zombie 2 he thematized a zombie who is able to remember a previous life, and in Land of the Dead even a whole culture that the undead had created and defended against the living. This brought the zombie topic closer to Richard Matheson.

In films like Fido - Good Dead are Hard to Find , the subject of the "civilization" of the dead was once again ironically taken up. Overall, all current zombie films have a realistic infection scenario and the lack of metaphysical and / or religious motifs as the reason for the mutation in common. The adaptation to a realistic scenario is increasingly sought.

In recent years so-called mockbusters , mostly cheaply produced, very trashy zombie films, have come onto the market. These have the same content and titles that are confusingly similar to previous known zombie films. This has a technical marketing background.
