John Gilling

John Gilling (born May 29, 1912 in London , † November 22, 1984 in Madrid , Spain ) was a British screenwriter and film director .

Career

From the mid-1930s, Gilling worked as an assistant director. He also began writing screenplays in the 1940s. He made his debut as executive director in 1948 with the short film Escape from Broadmoor . In the next two decades he succeeded with directing work in the crime, adventure and horror film genre, specializing in inexpensive cinema productions, for which he wrote the script himself on various occasions. He was represented with various works for Warwick Films by Albert R. Broccoli and Irving Allen and in the 1960s for Hammer Films . Particularly successful was his zombie film The Plague of the Zombies ( The Plague of the Zombies ), had the great influence on later genre films.

During that decade, he also turned to television. He staged in the years 1962 to 1969 several episodes of the series The Saint , 1969/1970 turned Gilling seven episodes of Department S . In 1975 his last film production was La cruz del diablo . This horror flick was made in Spain, where he also spent the last years of his life. His oeuvre includes around 40 feature films and over 50 screenplays.
