action
England at the turning point 1648/49. King Charles I is on the run from his worst adversary, the statesman Oliver Cromwell , who wants to put the monarch on trial so that he can then be executed. Cromwell's reign of terror begins when he sends his confidante Colonel Judd to the country to take care of the common people's peace and order. Meanwhile, a group of loyal royalists have banded together to hatch a plan to save the king when he is taken to the Tower of London . Edward Beverley is the head of this anti-Cromwell rebel, whom his confidants also call "the scarlet blade" in view of his fencing skills. This makes him a constant nuisance to the stubborn Judd, who does everything in his power to get hold of the “scarlet blade”. In this mortal hostility, reminiscent of the relationship between Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, Beverley tries to make Judd's life hell out of the ambush by means of repeated attacks.
The “scarlet blade” attacks its people when they least expect it, incites the locals against the new rulers and even dares attacks on Judd's positions. The latter in turn does everything to catch his opponent in order to then be able to execute him publicly. The Cromwell envoy does not know that his own daughter Claire is also secretly supporting the royalist rebels. Colonel Judd's closest confidante, Captain Tom Sylvester, a beefy, brutal Landsknecht guy, has meanwhile cast an eye on his superior's daughter. He promises to keep her secret of the royalists to herself if she in turn promises to listen and love him. So in distress, Claire reluctantly agrees to comply with Sylvester's demands, although she can't stand his rowdy manner. Claire hopes to be able to win New Year's Eve for the royalists' cause soon. He keeps his promise and even meets with the head of the royalists, the “scarlet blade”. However, when Claire Tom makes it clear that in reality she has long been in love with Edward Beverley, Captain Sylvester changes sides again and thus puts Beverley and his people as well as Claire Judd in extreme danger.
