Bernard William Robinson (born July 27, 1912 in Northwich , Cheshire , United Kingdom , † March 2, 1970 in Surrey ) was a British film architect whose work is closely connected to the horror film production of the company Hammer Films .

Life

Robinson received his artistic training at the Liverpool School of Art and Design in the early 1930s . He was then taken over by the Warner Teddington Studios as a film illustrator. In 1939 Robinson was promoted to production designer for the production company British Lion Films, but was called up soon after as a result of World War II . Robinson's job as a designer in uniform was to camouflage vital facilities on the British Isles in order to protect them from German bombings.

Back in civilian life, Robinson continued his work in film in 1946. With its design of eerie gothic atmosphere Terence Fisher's Dracula - remake succeeded Bernard Robinson late 50s the final breakthrough. For the next ten years he was considered to be the most important and most sought-after backdrop designer for British horror fabrics of all kinds. "He was particularly impressed by the designs for the creepy thriller ' A Dead Plays the Piano ' and the morbid horror piece 'The Burning Eyes of Bartimore Castle' ". The greatest challenge for Robinson was always to make the look of the mostly low budget hammer films look as expensive and classy as possible.

Robinson spent his little free time painting. He was married to the make-up artist Margaret Robinson (* 1920), who had also worked on numerous great films.
