action

In 1895, after 20 years of unsuccessful search, a group of Egyptologists consisting of Peter Banning , his father Stephen Banning and his uncle Joseph Whemple discovered the legendary tomb of Princess Ananka . Stephen Banning and Joseph Whemple enter the tomb despite warnings from a mysterious Egyptian named Mehemet Bey . Only Peter is left behind with a broken leg. The tomb is actually sealed and completely untouched. Whemple goes back to the camp to report to Peter while Stephen Banning continues to look around. In doing so, he discovers the "Scroll of Thoth " in a niche , which is said to be used to bring the dead back to life. Fascinated, he begins to recite part of the script, unintentionally reviving the mummy of the high priest Kharis . A short time later you can hear Banning's bloodcurdling scream from outside.

England, five years later. Peter's father has been in a state of complete apathy since that day and is cared for in a sanatorium for the mentally ill. Suddenly, however, he begins to rage and claims that a living mummy is after him. In fact, a short time later, he is murdered by Kharis. After the funeral, Peter sits in his study with his uncle Joseph, wondering whether there is a grain of truth in the myths about Ananka's grave.

According to an old legend, Princess Ananka and the high priest Kharis were lovers, but it was a forbidden love as it was dedicated to the god Karnak. When she died of a severe fever, Kharis thought that with her death the vow would have become null and void. So he stole the sacred scroll of Thoth, broke into its burial chamber and tried to revive it. But he was discovered and whether this grave crime against the gods was condemned to live mummification. He was also condemned to have to watch over the princess' grave forever without finding peace and destroying anyone who disturbs Ananka's peace.

At that moment the front door is thrown open and the mummy rushes in. She grabs Joseph Whemple in front of Peter's eyes, who has to sit idly by as his uncle dies. When the mummy attacks Peter himself, his wife Isabel , who looks like the portrait of Princess Ananka , enters the room. The mummy sees her, lets go of him and trots away.

Peter begins investigating and finds out that the mysterious Egyptian Mehemet Bey was behind the attacks. When his father awoke the mummy and went mad at the sight of it, Bey had stolen the scroll and the mummy in order to punish the "infidels" for their disrespect: Bey worships the god Karnak and therefore regards it as sacrilege that strangers do that Desecrated the grave of Ananka.

Bey sends the mummy out again to kill Peter and Isabel stands in her way again. Bey, obsessed with fulfilling his “sacred” duty, tries to kill her - and thereby becomes the victim of the mummy himself. Kharis, who thinks he recognizes his lover in her, kidnaps her into the swamp. At the last moment Isabel is able to free herself and the mummy is shot to pieces by Peter and the police who hurry to help. Finally, Kharis sinks into the muddy waters, clutching the sacred scroll of Thoth.

Others

  • During the filming, Christopher Lee suffered various injuries due to his role:
    • He dislocated his shoulder when he had to break open a door in one scene because it had been mistakenly locked beforehand.
    • He suffered some minor burns from the charges attached to his body for the rifle shots.
    • In addition, in the swamp scenes he injured his knees and shins several times on the water pipes that were necessary to create the swamp, as the pipes could not be seen from above due to the dirty brown color of the water.
  • Hammer had already filmed the universal classics Frankenstein and Dracula. Revenge of the Pharaohs was the first remake for which Hammer bought the rights from Universal, so the film company was able to use the original name "Kharis" for the mummy.

  • Lexicon of international films : “A rather weak remake of the classic horror film 'The Mummy' (1933), made in the studios of the British 'Hammer Productions', which were also responsible for the popular 'Dracula' films with Christopher Lee. "
