Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace is a Sherlock Holmes film by Terence Fisher from the year 1962 . The screenplay, which is loosely based on Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Valley of Fear , was written by Curt Siodmak .
action
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are looking for the valuable necklace of Cleopatra , allegedly laden with a curse , which disappeared shortly after it was discovered in Egypt by the archaeologist Professor Moriarty . They suspect that the ingenious but unscrupulous scientist is in possession of the jewel, but Inspector Cooper of Scotland Yard does not believe this assumption. The trail leads to Moriarty's expedition colleague Peter Blackburn, who stole the collar during the excavation work. Moriarty has him killed and gets the collar, which he hides in a sarcophagus . Holmes tracks it down there and hands it to Inspector Cooper. When the collar is on the way to the auction house, where it is to be auctioned, Moriarty has the police van ambushed. Since Holmes has sneaked into the gangsters, he can get the collar back so that it can still be auctioned; Moriarty, who believed it was in his possession, reluctantly has to confirm its authenticity.
criticism
Segnalazione Cinematografiche complained that the film reduced the narrative to banalities and was a sloppy implementation with modest directing and acting. On the other hand, the lexicon of international films found it to be a "[a] must-have detective game in the guise of the turn of the century, which comes very close to the peculiar charm of the Holmes adventures by Arthur Conan Doyle." The Protestant film observer drew the following conclusion: "Lightweight crime entertainment without hardship, whose weird playfulness is unfortunately missing the finishing touch. "
Remarks
Harry Wüstenhagen , who lent his voice to Christopher Lee in this film, took on this part for three other Holmes actors, namely for Ian Richardson in The Dog of Baskerville and The Sign of Four , for Nicol Williamson in No Coke for Sherlock Holmes and for John Neville in Sherlock Holmes' greatest case .
The opening scene of the film was shot at Berlin's Westhafen and the scene in which Holmes breaks into Moriarty's house at Glienicke Palace .
