Outwitted the death (original title: The Man Who Could Cheat Death ) is a horror film from 1959 by the director Terence Fisher , which he directed for the Hammer film studios . It is a remake of The Man in Half Moon Street based on the 1945 book by Barré Lyndon , directed by Ralph Murphy .

In Paris in the 1890s, Dr. Georges Bonnet, together with his colleague Prof. Ludwig Weiss, revealed the secret of eternal youth many years ago. Bonnet has since tried to extend his life through regular gland transplants (every 10 years). To do this, he murders young women and removes parathyroid glands from them to use as the elixir of life. Even though he looks like a man in his forties, he has reached the respectable age of 104 in this way. But the people around him are now becoming suspicious and are trying by all means to prevent him from possibly turning 200 years old. When Bonnet has to undergo such an operation again, he asks his now very aged colleague Weiss to carry it out, but he refuses when he learns that Bonnet is committing murders for it. Weiss is killed in the course of an altercation. Bonnet then forces Dr. Pierre Gerard to perform the operation by threatening the life of the young Janine Dubois, to whom Gerard is attracted.
