action

Farmer Ian Bellows is missing on remote Petrie's Island. Alarmed by the wife, the sergeant Harris goes on a search and finds Bellow's body in a cave. Harris, terrified, notices that the dead man's body is boneless. The summoned doctor, Dr. Landers cannot explain the disappearance of the skeleton. Landers travels to London to meet the distinguished pathologist Dr. To consult Stanley. But Stanley is also at a loss. Landers and Stanley are looking for Dr. West, an expert on bone disease. West, who is interrupted at a dinner with his girlfriend Toni Merrill, is fascinated by the case and agrees to help. Merrill offers the three men to fly to the island in their father's helicopter if they can come with them.

When the four reach the island, the helicopter is ordered back. West and Stanley learn that a group of oncologists have set up a laboratory in a castle on the island. Dr. Phillips, the leader of the group, wants to find a cure for cancer. Stanley, Landers and West find Phillips and the group: dead and just as boneless. The three suspect that they can solve the riddle in the laboratory and examine the group's documents. These show that Phillips accidentally created a new life form.

Sergeant Harris comes to the castle to notify the scientists that a boneless horse has been found. He enters a room in which laboratory animals were kept and is attacked and killed by a tentacle-armored creature. West and Stanley find out that the creatures inject a bone-dissolving enzyme and use it to kill their victims. Landers also finds out that the creatures are very difficult to kill when he defends himself with an ax when he attacks him.

After studying the documents of Dr. Phillips inform West and Stanley of the islanders. A kind of vigilante group is formed under the direction of Roger Campbell and the businessman Peter Argyle. The creatures are attacked with whatever is at hand: firearms, dynamite, and incendiary bombs. But even these weapons are almost useless. When a creature is found dead, Landers, West, and Stanley examine the body. The creature died of an overdose of the isotope strontium 90. The scientists are looking for more material. They give the strontium to a herd of cows and drive the animals to the creatures so that they can eat them. The men watch through a telescope as the creatures die.

Reviews

"Outlandish horror story; mixed with gimmicks and pseudoscientific attempts at explanation. "

"Cheap shocker with trash charm."

- Cinema .

“English horror film by Terence Fischer, which spreads more boredom than horror. [...] A gentle impertinence even for horror fans. "

background

Not to be confused with the horror film of the same name by and with Bill Naud from 1982 (OT: Scared Alive ).

The film was shot at Pinewood Studios and Black Park Country Park in Wexham.

Together with Christopher Lee , Peter Cushing and director Terence Fisher formed a legendary horror trio that shot several Dracula and Frankenstein films for the British Hammer Studios .

For both scriptwriters it was the first work on a script for a feature film. In the case of Al Ramsen, it was also the last work.
