George Hickenlooper
George Hickenlooper (born May 25, 1963 in St. Louis , Missouri , † October 30, 2010 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American film director , screenwriter and film producer .
Life
In 1986 he graduated from Yale University with a BA in History and Film Studies. He made his debut as a director and screenwriter in 1988 with the television documentary Art, Acting, and the Suicide Chair: Dennis Hopper , a short presentation with and about the actor Dennis Hopper .
Three years later he shot Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse , also Hearts of Darkness , a documentary about the making of the war film Apocalypse Now by director Francis Ford Coppola . This production was awarded two Emmys ; Hickenlooper received one of them together with Eleanor Coppola and Fax Bahr, who were also involved as directors in the production. In the same year he directed a documentary about Peter Bogdanovich entitled Twice Texas . In 1993 he finally made his first feature film, The Killing Box . For his other films, including another documentary entitled Mayor of the Sunset Strip from 2003, he also wrote the script for each. In addition, he worked as an executive producer for various documentaries. According to a coroner , he died - without intent to commit suicide - from a mixture of alcohol and the accidentally overdosed pain reliever, oxymorphone .
His cousin, John Hickenlooper, was mayor of Denver and successfully ran for governor of Colorado in 2010.
