action

Byron Tiller is married with one child. He spent years writing a novel that landed on the rooting table soon after its publication. His second book doesn't get through to the editor at his publisher and he is desperately looking for a job to keep himself and his family afloat.

During this crisis he met Luther Fox, who offered him to work in his escort agency Elysian Fields . He agrees and thus comes together with Andrea, the wife of the successful author Tobias Allcott. He is terminally ill and therefore agrees that his wife be “cared for” in this way. Soon Tiller also has to help the star author with his latest work. It is agreed that he will be officially named as a co-author and receive 30% of the proceeds. Allcott dies before publication and his book appears only under his name as his widow wants to maintain his reputation.

Byron separates from Andrea, but realizes that he has also lost his wife, who discovered his "affair". In order to stay afloat, he now waits in a friend's restaurant. By rewriting the menu, he regains the joy of writing. He processes the separation from his wife in a novel that is very successful and brings the two back together.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on November 1, 2002 that the film was a "rare comedy about behavior" - witty, malicious and urbane. It is one of the best films of the year. The portrayal of Andy Garcia shows courage because he embodies a weak character.

Film-Dienst wrote that the film was "a charming, well-acted social comedy based on a cleverly devised script" . He used “the usual entanglements” to “question real values” .
