reception

Despite moderate reviews, Rampant had a successful start in South Korean cinemas and reached over 1.5 million viewers in the first week of cinema.

Shim Sun-ah from Yonhap is convinced of the premise, but the plot is predictable. There are some original scenes with a zombie in traditional clothing and brilliant action sequences, but the story and characters are too weak. The motives of the antagonist are unclear, Hyun Bin's character is a classic action hero. James Marsh from the South China Morning Post is the execution "plump" and awards 2.5 out of 5 stars. According to Elizabeth Kerr from the Hollywood Reporter , the film floats on the Korean zombie wave set in motion by Train to Busan (2016). This is the reason for the success at the box office, but apart from zombies carrying hanbok and the beautiful scenery , Rampant can not keep up with Train . Mavis Wong from The New Paper gave the film 3.5 stars and noted that Rampant, despite a predictable story, had good character development in the audience. Houston Chronicle's Cary Darling gave the film a very positive rating. Rampant is a good zombie slaughter, the only drawback is the many characters you don't really get to know, which is why their deaths have no effect on the audience. Park Jin-hai of the Korea Times sees the film mixed. There is no character development and the jokes with a political background are questionable. Fans of Kim's previous film Confidential Assignment (2017) should, however, like the action scenes.
