Stations of the train in South Korea

The busy fund manager Seok-woo lets his daughter Su-an persuade him to go to Busan for her birthday , since her mother lives there, whom she has hardly seen since her parents divorced. For their journey, they take the KTX high-speed train from a train station in Seoul . When the train leaves, Su-an sees a train employee being attacked on the platform. Your father is already sleeping. Shortly before that, a girl who was severely injured was able to save herself on the train. Su-an wanders through the train and sees in another compartment how the girl attacks a train employee who wanted to help her beforehand. This turns into a zombie after the bite . At that moment, her father also comes, grabs Su-and they flee to one of the front compartments, where they barricade themselves with others.

A KTX in the Seoul train station . Most of the film takes place on the bullet train on the Seoul to Busan route.

News reports of riots in Seoul are on the screens and Seok-woo's mother calls him just before she allegedly dies. In the compartment are also Sang-hwa and his heavily pregnant wife Sung-kyung, the cheerleader Jin-hee, the baseball player Young-gook and other players, as well as Yong-suk, the CEO of a large company, a homeless person and their older siblings In-gil and Jong-gil. The platoon leader announced that, contrary to Yong-suk's request, he would stop in Cheonan , because of the unrest, he would drive through to Daejeon without stopping , where the army should still have the situation under control. Seok-woo then calls one of his private customers, who is a lieutenant in the military, who tells him that everyone arriving there will be immediately quarantined . Seok-woo wants to avoid this, whereupon the officer instructs him to take the east exit instead of the main exit at the station.

The train stops in Daejeon, but nobody can be seen on the platforms. First everyone goes to the exit together, Seok-woo and his daughter, followed by the homeless man, separate from the group and take a different route. There, however, he receives a panicked call from the lieutenant; he could no longer reach his men. It soon turns out that the soldiers are already infected, and they immediately attack the arriving passengers. Some of them can barely escape back on the train. Seok-woo's daughter is saved by Sang-hwa. Because of the zombies charging from everywhere on the platform, the passengers have to flee to different compartments. Jin-hee, Jong-gil and Yong-suk are safely in compartment 15 with most of the other passengers. Sung-kyung, Su-an, the homeless and In-gil, who barely managed to escape a group of zombies in the car locked himself in a toilet room in compartment 13. Seok-woo, Sang-hwa and Young-gook are in compartment 9. The latter learns of the dangerous situation after a phone call from Su-an and Sung-kyung, whereupon they decide to save them and get to them. Young-gook learns from Jin-hee that Compartment 15 is safe. So the three struggle with difficulty against the zombies on the train.

In doing so, they observe that the zombies cannot see anything in the dark, when they pass through tunnels, and then only react to noises. They take advantage of this and reach compartment 13. After they have freed Su-an, Sung-kyung, In-gil and the homeless, they only have to go through compartment 14 to the safe compartment 15. However, the other survivors have left there Fear of the infected barricaded the door. Sang-hwa sacrifices himself trying to stop the zombies behind them for as long as possible. His last words were addressed to Sung-kyung. Before the door breaks, he gives the name of the unborn girl. After this sentence the door breaks and the zombies pounce on Sang-hwa. The time saved helps the others to open the barricaded door and escape. In-gil also stays behind so that the others can flee. However, for fear of infection, the newcomers are banished from Yong-suk to a separate compartment. Shortly afterwards, however, Jong-gil opens the door to the zombies so that he can be with her sister again. The zombies now also overrun compartment 15, only Yong-suk can get to safety in a toilet room with a train employee. Besides the two of them, only Seok-woo, Su-an, Sung-kyung, Young-gook, Jin-hee and the homeless person in compartment 16 are still alive, as is the train driver.

In Daegu , the track is blocked by overturned wagons, which is why the survivors have to look for a new train. Meanwhile, a burning, driverless speeding locomotive crashes into the overturned wagons, which are still full of zombies. Young-gook and Jin-hee are able to save themselves from the overturning train in time, while Seok-woo, Su-an, Sung-kyung and the homeless are trapped. Seok-woo manages to slip out before a heavy object closes the opening. The homeless person sacrifices himself to protect Su-an and Sung-kyung from the zombies while they are rescued by Seok-woo and is bitten. In search of a new move, Yong-suk, Young-gook and Jin-hee fight a zombie. Yong-suk throws Jin-hee into the zombie's arms and gets bitten. Young-gook then fights the zombie alone and throws him off the train. Heartbroken, he spends Jin-hee's last few seconds with her before he is bitten by her. The train driver finds another locomotive and slowly drives it out of the shed, but is killed by zombies when he tries to save Yong-suk, the locomotive continues without a driver. Seok-woo, Su-an and Sung-kyung still make it onto the locomotive and find the infected Yong-suk in the driver's cab, who is about to become a zombie. Seok-woo fights with him, but is bitten, which seals his fate. Aware of this, he says goodbye to his daughter. As he transforms, he thinks of the moment he held Su-an in his arms for the first time and smiles before dropping off the locomotive to save at least the last two survivors.

Su-an and Sung-kyung make it without incident to a blocked tunnel just before Busan, where they stop the locomotive to cross the unlit tunnel on foot. The guards at the other end are ordered to shoot them because they are not sure whether they are survivors or zombies. When Su-an suddenly begins to tearfully sing the song " Aloha ʻOe " that her father had practiced , they recognize their mistake at the last moment. The two are finally saved by the soldiers.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews. Maggie Lee from Variety particularly praised the cut, which increases the tension immeasurably. Since a high-speed train to the main venue is the film, they compared this with Snowpiercer by Bong Joon-ho . Hollywood Reporter's Leslie Felperin drew the same comparison.
