The Avenida de Motael is a main street of the East Timorese capital Dili , which connects the center with the Avenida de Portugal , which runs west on the coast , and on which there are several historical buildings, green areas and sights. It has a length of about 1.1 kilometers.

Surname

The street is named after the Suco Motael ( Vera Cruz Administrative Office ) through which it passes. This takes its name from the old, Timorese empire that ruled the region until the Portuguese colonial times. Motael was the residential area of the European population after the founding of Dilis.

Under the Portuguese, the street Avenida Salazar was named after the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar (1889-1970). After the Indonesian occupation (1975-1999), the street was incorporated into the western Avenida de Portugal . It was not until 2015 that the section was renamed Avenida de Motael .

Road map

The Avenida de Motael is a continuation of the Avenida Marginal , which splits in the west. While Avenida Nicolau Lobato continues west, Avenida de Motael branches off to the northwest. The monument to Manuel Jesus Pires and the city park Jardim 5 de Maio with the integration monument are located between the two streets . The seat of government of the Portuguese governor used to be located here, but it was rebuilt further east after its destruction in World War II . To the right of Avenida de Motael is the port of Dilis for almost the entire length. At its northern end is the monument to the Santa Cruz massacre in the Jardim Motael , directly opposite the Church of Santo António de Motael and further north the Jardim Borja da Costa . At the point where the Avenida de Motael reaches the coast, it swings to the west, past the Embassy of Thailand (left) and the lighthouse of Motael (right) and merges into Avenida de Portugal . One of the oldest still existing monuments of Dilis, the Monumento Artur de Canto Resende , one of the few relics from the Portuguese colonial times that survived the Indonesian occupation of East Timor unscathed, rises in a small green area . It commemorates the Portuguese surveyor and cartographer Artur do Canto Resende , who was deported to Alor by the Japanese in World War II and died there in captivity. Opposite the lighthouse is the Ministry of Tourism in a colonial villa that was renovated and converted with Korean help in 2003 .
