Vera Cruz is an East Timorese administrative office ( Portuguese Posto Administrativo ) of the municipality of Dili and forms the western center of the state capital Dili . The trade center with the port, the government palace and the national parliament of East Timor are located here . The seat of the administration is in Mascarenhas .

Until 2014, the administrative offices were still referred to as sub-districts . Before the 2015 territorial reform, Vera Cruz had an area of ​​32.77 km². Now it is 25.92 km².

Vera Cruz is located on the south bank of the Bay of Dili . To the west it borders on the Dom Aleixo administrative office and to the east on the Nain Feto and Cristo Rei administrative offices . In the south lies the municipality of Aileu with its administrative office Laulara . The north-western border to Dom Aleixo is the Maloa River in the rainy season . The Rio Comoro with its tributaries, Beinas and Bemos, follows the south and south-west borders . A third periodic river flows between Maloa and Rio Comoro from Vera Cruz to Dom Aleixo.

On July 14, 2004, the Sucos Lahane Oriental and Santa Cruz were separated from Vera Cruz in a territorial reform and the Sucos Colmera , Motael and Vila Verde were added. The Vera Cruz administration office is now divided into seven sucos: Caicoli , Colmera, Dare , Lahane Ocidental , Mascarenhas ( Mascarinhas ), Motael and Vila Verde. All sucos, except Dare, which consists of the hills inland, are classified as urban.

36,574 people live in Vera Cruz (2015), of which 18,878 are men and 17,696 women. The population density is 1,411.2 inhabitants / km². The average age is 21.5 years (2010, 2004: 19.4 years).

The administrator of the administrative office is appointed by the central government in Dili. In 2009, José FX Simith was appointed administrator. In 2015 the office was held by Manuel Gusmão .

economy

In urban Dili, too, the residents cultivate fields and gardens to increase their livelihood. 12% of the households in Vera Cruz have coconut palms, 12% grow cassava, 11% corn, 9% vegetables and 4% coffee. Pets such as chickens and pigs are also kept.
