from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artur do Canto Resende (born August 7, 1897 in Vila Franca do Campo , Azores , Portugal ; † February 23, 1945 in Kalabahi , Alor , Dutch East Indies ) was a Portuguese surveyor.

Life

Resende graduated from the Externato de Vila Franca and the Liceu de Ponta Delgada and then studied at the University of Coimbra . On November 18, 1927, he completed his studies as a surveyor. He started at the Instituto Geográfico e Cadastral de Lisboa ( Institute for Geography and Cadastre Lisbon ) initially with topographical surveys in Portugal. This was followed by several missions in the African colonies. In 1937 Resende became deputy head of the newly created Missão Geográfica de Timor ( Geographical Mission of Timor ). In August 1938 he arrived on board the steamer Colonial in Portuguese Timor .

During the Second World War , Japan occupied the colony of what was actually a neutral country in 1942 ( see: Battle of Timor ). Portuguese Timor Governor Manuel de Abreu Ferreira de Carvalho was imprisoned in the Palácio de Lahane . Officially, the Portuguese administration continued to exist, but power was in the hands of the Japanese Consul General Yodogawa . After the administrator of the district Dili Lourenço de Aguilar, who was already despised by the Japanese, gave up his post due to illness, Resende agreed to take over the post. In this office, he tried to save people, distributed food and clothing and campaigned for the release of prisoners sentenced to death.

The exact background is not known, but Resende was forced to resign on March 9, 1944, presumably due to denunciation. In July 1944 he was arrested by the Japanese military police and interned in Kalabahi on the neighboring island of Alor. Here he died in captivity on February 23, 1945.
