Monument to Mother of God

Monument to Mother of God

The Mother of God Memorial ( Monumentu Nosa Señora, Monumento a Nossa Senhora , also Monumento da Imaculada Conceição ) was erected under Governor Capitão César Maria de Serpa Rosa from 1954 and inaugurated in 1956. Alberto Simões took over the planning of the building . Since the monument was erected, Largo de Lecidere , with Fatima Park in the center, has been the site of religious ceremonies in Dili, such as the consecration of Alberto Ricardo da Silva as Bishop of Dili in 2004. During the Indonesian occupation, a group of people worshiped the guided tour of Margarida Soares every day at the Monument for Peace in East Timor.

The monument stands in the center of a garden on Largo de Lecidere , east of the square in front of the government palace. Below the statue of Mary, which is surrounded by angels, one can see the colonial coat of arms of Portuguese Timor . There are several Christ crosses on the base.

In front of the government palace is the monument to Heinrich the Navigator , which was erected in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Heinrich's death. It consists of a column with the coat of arms of Portugal, the cross of Christ, a compass rose, a sextant and the inscription Por Mares Nunca Dantes Navegados ( German  on seas that have never been traveled before ) in the middle of a round water basin , which was only added after the independence of East Timor in 2002 . The monument was made of Portuguese limestone and its shape, which is supposed to be reminiscent of the sail of a caravel , is based on the Padrão dos Descobrimentos , the monumental counterpart to the local monument in the Lisbon district of Belém .

A mass grave with at least 72 bodies was discovered at the memorial between June and July 2012. It was unclear whether they were victims of the Indonesian invasion and the subsequent executions at the Toko-Lay building or who died in World War II. Since the dead were relatively large, it was assumed that the victims were members of the Chinese minority.

Monuments from the Indonesian occupation

Jesus statue

Cristo Rei

The large statue of Jesus ( Cristo Rei, Chritu Rei ) overlooks Dili from the east end of the bay, above Areia Branca Beach . At first glance, it is very similar to those in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro , but was not built by the Portuguese, but in 1988 by the Indonesian occupiers who wanted to make themselves popular with the people. Its height of 27 meters alludes to the fact that East Timor was incorporated into Indonesia as the 27th province. The oversized feet are striking and the residents of Dilis see the statue's outstretched arms less as a protective gesture than as an expression of resignation, which is why the statue is popularly called Jesus - “What can I do?” . Since the statue of Jesus faces west, there is the interpretation that it does not spread its arms over Dili, but over the Indonesian capital Jakarta .

There is a chapel next to the statue of the Pope, which also commemorates him.
