Mercado Municipal (Dili)
The Mercado Municipal ( city market , today also Centro de Convenções de Díli CCD) of East Timor's capital Dili is a building from the Portuguese colonial era. It is located in Suco Caicoli ( Vera Cruz Administration Office ), opposite the National Stadium .
The building was only erected in the last decades of the Portuguese in Timor before they left the country in 1975. During the Indonesian Operation Donner in 1999, the building was almost completely destroyed except for the facade of the portal. Since the reconstruction, the red and white building has served as a trade fair and conference center. The coat of arms of Portugal is shown above the main portal and the words “ MERCADO MUNICIPAL DILI ” .
The cross-shaped floor plan of the building creates four half courtyards. In the past, the various product groups were divided between the four wings. In the center you can switch between the four areas directly. Between the two levels of the double gable roof are windows that supply the interior with air and light, but keep out heavy rain. The entrance consists of a main portal and two side portals, with a total of six columns.
