Belém [ bɨˈlɐ̃j ], Portuguese for Bethlehem , is a district ( freguesia ) on the Tagus River in the west of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . 8,546 inhabitants live in the 3.45 km² community (as of June 30, 2011).

The place was independent until 1885, after which it was incorporated into Lisbon. Since Belém was hardly affected by the great earthquake in 1755 , which largely destroyed downtown Lisbon, there are many famous sights of the Portuguese capital here, especially those from the time before the quake.

On February 7, 1959, the northern part was raised to a separate municipality as São Francisco Xavier . In the run-up to the municipal reform on September 29, 2013 , the two municipalities were merged again.
