Alvalade is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the 3rd Bairro of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It has 8985 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
The municipality was created in 1959 when it was separated from the municipality of Campo Grande . It is bounded in the north by the Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América and in the south by the route of the Linha de Cintura ring line.
The name Alvalade probably comes from the Arabic al-balad , which means an inhabited and walled place. In 1321 the Battle of Alvalade between the Portuguese King Dionysius and his successor Alfonso IV took place here.
The patron saint of the community is Blessed Joan of Portugal .
