Nina Simone Vidal (born April 20 in Queens, New York ) is an American singer-songwriter- artist and pianist.

Musical career

Nina Vidal was born in Queens , New York . While studying at New York University , she regularly attended open mic evenings. It was on one such evening that she met the artist, producer and composer Caté . She gave him a demo and Caté made up her mind. produce some of their songs. These songs were later released on an EP called Do It Again .

In 2004 the Japanese music label Uni-Village Vidal responded to her songs. The producers had heard their songs and wanted to sign them to produce a full album. In 2008 the album Nina Vidal was released under the label . Six days after its release, it was the most downloaded album on iTunes, overtaking Norah Jones with her album Come Away With Me , which had previously topped the contemporary Japanese jazz album charts. Vidal stayed at the top for eight months in a row. In September this year, the album was also number 1 on the download charts on iTunes and five of the songs made it into the top 10 of the Japanese jazz charts. She was 25 years old then.

In 2010, Nina Vidal signed a sub-publishing contract with Universal Music Japan. She released the single Cigarette & Wine and the song My Lov, written by Paul McCartney , on iTunes. Both singles come from their second album, The Open-Ended Fantasy , which was released on September 1st in Japan and November 2011 in the USA. Vidal worked on The Open-Ended Fantasy with artists such as Lonnie Plaxico , Jean Caze , Jeff Haynes , Lee Hogans and Jody Redhage . The album was again produced by Caté.

In January 2011 Vidal started recording a new album for which she covered love songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. It was released in 2013 under the title Covers in Japan. In the same year, the album Silver Lining was released with its own songs, which was followed by the compilation Best Of Nina Vidal in 2016 .

Vidal lives in New York City but travels frequently to Asia and Europe .

Style and Influences

Vidal's influences can be traced back to soul, jazz, hip-hop and world music. She has been compared with the following artists, among others: Jeff Buckley , Tracy Chapman , Amos Lee , Lizz Wright , Djavan , Nina Simone , Anita Baker , Sade Adu , Antônio Carlos Jobim and Fiona Apple .

reception

The Soul Express (Finland) described Vidal's debut album as "A timeless masterpiece!" Allmusic's Adam Greenberg wrote that "Nina Vidal draws her inspiration from a wide range of female singers ... her own soft, swelling style."

Vidal was hired as the singer for the song Moon Child by the Japanese artist Kenichiro Nishihara .
