In order to process the experience, she later wrote the song Sullen Girl and did psychotherapy . Fiona has also been in psychotherapeutic treatment for aggression and psychological problems , among other things because as a teenager she threatened to kill herself and her sister Amber.

Through a friend, she got a recording deal with Epic Records in 1996 . Her album Tidal won a Grammy . Her video for Sleep to Dream won the 1997 MTV Video Music Award . Her appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards 1997 received a lot of media attention. Career

Tidal

In 1996 Tidal was released , their debut album, which to date has sold more than 3 million times in the USA alone (triple platinum ). Criminal , their third single, got a huge response. Other singles from the album are Sleep to Dream , Shadowboxer , Never is a Promise and The First Taste .

After her debut success and some controversy - u. a. an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards where she berated the music industry - it's 3 years before the next release.

When the Pawn ...

After a dispute with the record company, which with the 90-word long title ( When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King / What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight / And He'll Win the Whole Thing ' Fore He Enters the Ring / There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind is Your Might / So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand / And Remember That Depth is the Greatest of Heights / And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land / And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right ), their second album was released in 1999. The album name, a poem written by Fiona, is usually shortened to When the Pawn .

The musically more experimental album is praised by many critics and fans and although it still achieved platinum status, it does not come close to the success of its debut. Fast as You Can , Paper Bag and Limp are released as singles .

In 2002 Apple was a guest singer for the Simon & Garfunkel classic Bridge over Troubled Water on Johnny Cash's album American IV: The Man Comes Around . She also sang a cover version of Cat Stevens' Father And Son with Cash , which appeared posthumously on his album Unearthed .

Extraordinary Machine

In 2003, the record company refused to release the third album Extraordinary Machine . The material has been labeled "commercially unsuccessful". Fiona Apple's career was up in the air.

In the course of time, however, individual songs from the unreleased album appeared in Internet file sharing networks and were also played by small radio stations. Fans organized the Free Fiona campaign for release in January 2005 . On August 15, 2005, the record company finally announced the release of a revised version of Extraordinary Machine for October 2005.

As a producer acts Mike Elizondo , known for his work with hip-hop -Künstlern such. B. Dr. Dre , co-producer is Brian Kehew . Of the eleven songs that have already appeared, nine have been completely revised and a new song ( Parting Gift ) has been recorded. According to Elizondo, the production now sounds “completely different”. Despite listening to the earlier version produced by Jon Brion , "everything has been done from scratch".

The Idler Wheel ...

In June 2012 Apple released their fourth studio album, produced with concert drummer Charley Drayton, entitled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do ( The Idler Wheel ... ) . The date of publication was delayed by the artist due to internal label issues. The album received excellent reviews and topped a number of annual bests, including Time Magazine . The sound carrier received a rating of 89 out of 100 points on the Metacritic website .

After a long break, Apple returned to the public in December 2016 with an anti- Trump song called Trump's Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire (a corruption of the Christmas classic Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire ). In January 2017 she released the protest song Tiny Hands , written especially for the Women's March on Washington , together with producer Michael Whalen .

Fetch the bolt cutters

Only eight years after the last album came the fifth studio album called Fetch the Bolt Cutters in April 2020 . The musician has preferred the publication date.
