The 1997 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place on September 4, 1997. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 17, 1996 to June 16, 1997. The award ceremony took place at Radio City Music Hall , New York City , New York . Chris Rock was the moderator .

The winner of the evening was Beck , who won a total of five awards, closely followed by four from Jamiroquai , who took home the main prize Video of the Year for their video for Virtual Insanity . They also led the nomination list with a total of ten nominations.

That year, Fiona Apple's "acceptance speech" , which received the Best New Artist in a Video award, caught attention that was a tirade of hate on MTV itself.
