The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards was held at the Forum of Inglewood , California on August 27, 2017 . It was the 34th MTV Video Music Awards . The rapper Kendrick Lamar was nominated eight times , with six awards he was the most successful performer of the evening. The Video of the Year award and five other video awards were all related to his song Humble . Ed Sheeran was named Artist of the Year .

Winners and nominations
The nominees were announced on July 25, 2017, except for the “Song of the Summer”, which was not put up for election until August 24 in an internet vote. There were two fewer categories than last year and some changes. There was only one general video category, the separate categories for male and female interpreters were omitted, for which an “Artist of the Year” was awarded. The long video award was also omitted. New was a political award called Best Fight Against the System , which this time was dedicated to the fight against racism on the occasion of the riots in Charlottesville earlier this year. Heather Heyer's mother , who died at the time, gave a speech. The award went to six performers together.
The singer Pink received a special award for her work , the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award .
