The MTV Video Music Awards 1990 ceremony took place on September 6, 1990. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 2, 1989 to June 1, 1990. The award ceremony took place at the Universal Amphitheater , Universal City , California . Arsenio Hall was the moderator .

The winners of the evening were Madonna (artist) , who won a total of three technical categories, and Sinéad O'Connor , who also won three trophies, including the award for Video of the Year. With nine nominations, Madonna led the nomination list. Her video for Vogue was the most nominated video of the evening. For Madonna, it was the second night in a row that she triumphed at the MTV Video Music Awards.

This year the “Best Stage Performance in a Video” category, which had existed since 1984, was deleted.

The excitement of the year was the appearance of Janet Jackson , who tore off her shirt while performing her song Black Cat to show her bra.
