Black Velvet is a blues rock song written by Canadian musicians David Tyson and Christopher Ward . Alannah Myles recorded it for her first studio album, Alannah Myles , released in 1989 . The song reached top positions in the charts in many countries.

history

In 1988 the song was recorded by Alannah Myles. The song was released as the second single from the studio album and was initially a success in the French-Canadian region. The song is a tribute to Elvis Presley , among other things ; Love Me Tender is mentioned in the second stanza . Presley's voice is probably meant by the "Black Velvet". Ward wrote the song after traveling to Memphis with a group of fans to mark the tenth anniversary of Presley's death to produce a television report.

Success and cover version

The piece reached number 2 in the UK and number 1 in the US . In Germany it came in second place, in Austria in third place and in Switzerland in first place. Myles received the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the piece .

In 1990 country singer Robin Lee covered the piece. Their version reached number 12 on the US country singles chart .
