The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards were held on September 13, 2009 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City . The comedian Russell Brand was the presenter as in 2008. Madonna opened the show with an obituary for Michael Jackson . Then Janet Jackson danced live on stage while the video Scream with Michael Jackson was playing in the background.

The nominations were presented on August 4th. Beyoncé and Lady Gaga were nominated in nine categories each and Britney Spears in seven.

While Taylor Swift accepted her award and gave her acceptance speech, Kanye West jumped on stage, interrupted her, and snatched the microphone from her.
