MTV Video Music Awards / Best New Artist
The MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist , along with the main prize of the MTV Video Music Awards and some technical categories, is one of the few awards that have been presented since it was first presented in 1984 .
From 1984 to 2006 he operated under the name Best New Artist in a Video . In 2006 the name was changed to Best New Artist , because the awards that year were for the artist's complete oeuvre that year. However, the concept could not prevail and so it returned in 2007 under its original name. From 2013 to 2015, however, the category was called Artist to Watch . Since 2016, the entire work of a single artist has been rated again.
The award was aimed at newcomers. However, there have been several winners whose excellent videos were not from their debut albums. These were Eurythmics (1984), Nirvana (1992), Eminem (1999), Avenged Sevenfold (2006), Tokio Hotel (2008) and Gym Class Heroes (2007).
In 2020, the category was merged with the Best Push Artist to form the intersection category MTV Video Music Awards / Push Best New Artist .
