The MTV Video Music Awards 2012 presented by the music broadcaster MTV took place on September 6, 2012 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles . The annual event honors the best music videos from the previous year. It was hosted by the American actor and stand-up comedian Kevin Hart. Rihanna got the most nominations at eleven and Drake at five, while Katy Perry and Beyoncé each got four.

The most successful winners of the evening were One Direction , in which they won all three of their three nominations including 'Best New Artist', and Rihanna, who received the award for 'Video of the Year', becoming the first female singer and second person ever ( after Eminem ), who received this award more than once.
