Musical and content

Love on Top is an up- tempo R&B song that also contains elements of retro style from soul, pop , funk and jazz . It is written in C major and has a tempo of 94 beats per minute and four-four time. Knowle's vocal range extends from A 3 to C 6 in this song . Love on Tops Retro elements are created especially in the chorus by snapping fingers, a distorted bass and the use of horns and saxophones .

The text is about Knowles as the protagonist, who expresses her happiness by finding love. The chorus, which Knowles sings with a choir, begins with "Baby it's you, you're the one I love / You're the one I need / You're the only one I see / Come on baby it's you / You" re the one that gives your all / You're the one I can always call / When I need you make everything stop / Finally you put my love on top " ( " Baby, it's you, you're the one I love / You're the one I need / You're the only one I see / Go baby it's you / You're the one who does your best / You're the one I can always call / When I need you, lets you are everything else / Finally you make my love your priority. " ). The chorus, which is repeated to the end in the last part of the song, contains 4 key changes in chromatic order upwards.

criticism

Love on Top was mostly positively rated, the critics particularly praised the 80s mood that the song exuded and compared it with recordings by other artists such as Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder from this period. Rich Juzwiak of The Village Voice described the song as an easy-to-hear and easy-to-dance boogie vibe. Rolling Stone magazine's Matthew Perpetua called Love on Top an explosion and said that Knowles created a modern Whitney Houston-style take on it. Hamish MacBain from New Musical Express particularly likes the uptempo style of the song, as it would be urgently needed after the ballad-heavy beginning of the album.

IGN Entertainment's Spence D. wrote that Knowle's upbeat vibe and pushy horns could remind viewers how damn good mid-80s R&B was. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis praised Knowle's voice and called Love on Top a well-written song. Mixed review came from Adam Markovitz of Entertainment Weekly . He compared Knowle's work on Love on Top with that of earlier stars like Luther Vandross and Diana Ross , but they don't do it justice.

Commercial win
