B'Day is the Grammy -prämierte second solo album by the US -amerikanischen R & B - singer Beyoncé , first published on September 1, 2006, Columbia Records and Music World. The title of the album refers to Knowles' 25th birthday on September 4th , the worldwide release date of the record.

background

production

After previous songwriting, the album was recorded in April 2006 within two weeks at Sony Studios in New York City . Knowles and her team had rented the entire studio complex for this purpose, and had the individual producers (including Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins , Rich Harrison , The Neptunes , Swizz Beatz , Sean Garrett and the duo Stargate ) work on the respective tracks in parallel in different rooms.

In addition to Ne-Yo and Espen Lind , who contributed the song Irreplaceable to the album, the rappers TI and Lil Wayne also appeared for the studio recordings. In the end, however, neither rappers made it to the final version of B'Day .

publication

The album went straight to number one on the US Billboard 200 and the Top R & B / Hip-Hop album charts in September 2006 with more than 543,000 units sold and reached gold status in the US within just a week . While the sales figures remained constant, B'Day initially failed to build on the worldwide number one success of its predecessor Dangerously in Love outside the United States : The album was among the top 5 German, Swiss, British and Irish charts, but occasionally missed entry into the Austrian, French and Finnish top ten.

After several price cuts and the release of the hit single Irreplaceable , B'Day finally returned to the top ten of the Billboard charts. The record has now sold more than three million copies in the US alone and has so far received three times platinum . To date, Beyoncé has sold around seven million copies of her CD worldwide.

The second most successful single so far is Beautiful Liar with 4,417,000 copies sold, Beyoncé owes this above all to the great success in Europe and Latin America. Only the hit single Irreplaceable was more successful. This led the charts in the USA for ten weeks and the United World charts for twelve weeks. Irreplaceable has been a similar success in many other countries, including Australia, Brazil, Ireland, New Zealand, Greece, Croatia, and Poland. In South America, Irreplaceable was also a great success, but in the Spanish version Irreemplazable. The single sold over 5,950,000 times worldwide. This makes Irreplaceable Beyoncé's greatest success so far. Just behind is Crazy in Love with 5,800,000 units, and Beautiful Liar in third place with 4,471.00 units .

Deluxe Edition

The album B'Day was re-released on March 30, 2007 in the form of a deluxe edition . In addition to the original album titles, the revised version contains three previously unreleased songs, as well as a bonus CD with recordings in Spanish ; including collaborations with the Mexican singer Alejandro Fernandez and Jay-Z , and also the single Beautiful Liar , a duet with Shakira . After the release of the Deluxe Edition in the USA, the album jumped back into the top ten at number six with 126,000 copies sold. It was even more successful there in the hot R&B / hip-hop album charts. Here the B'Day Deluxe Edition landed in first place.

The title Kissing You from the soundtrack to William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet from 1996, which was originally published by the singer Des'ree , was allowed to be covered under two conditions: the title could not be changed and a new video clip was not allowed to appear. Since these conditions were both violated, Des'ree obtained a ban on sales of the album, which was initially in America until May 4th. Another version was released in Europe, containing a DVD with twelve video clips and seven previously unreleased songs.
