background

After filming Dreamgirls , where Beyoncé played the lead role, she began work on the second studio album. The film gave Knowles a lot of new ideas and inspiration for the album and the songs. Beyoncé contacted the songwriter Sean Garrett , who already wrote songs with her for Destiny's Child , including Knowle's hit single Check on It from 2006. Together with Pharrell , who had previously worked with Knowles, they booked the Sony Music Studios in New York City for shooting and production. Kitty Kat was also written, produced and recorded at the same time , which is also featured on B'Day .

Musical and content

Green Light is an R&B / Crunk / Funk song. The song was composed in F minor. The chords follow the Fm-G series and the Bm 7 minor. Green Light contains a uh-huh huh huh passage that corresponds to those of their hit Crazy in Love . In addition, the uh-oh-oh-oh-oh passage is a vocal imitation of Amerie's hit single 1 Thing from 2005.

The lyrics are in the traditional verse - chorus form. The song starts with the intro with Beyoncé singing Give it to mama . This is followed by the verse-chorus-verse-verse-chorus transitions with the bridge . Beyoncé repeats the chorus at the end of the song.

Green Light was released in the UK on July 30, 2007 as the fifth single on the album after Beautiful Liar . Together with the single, the remix EP Green Light: Freemasons EP was released on July 27, 2007 only as a download .

Criticism and success

Green Light was well received by critics. Eb Haynes from Allhiphop describes Green Light as a "classic R&B song". Allmusic's Andy Kellman describes the song as a "strong, powerful dance number". IGN's Spence D. stated, “'Green Light' brings summer feelings up.” “The song can be a real summer hit, but whether it ties in with the success of Beautiful Liar is questionable”.

The album version of the song was already available for download when the album was first released. Green Light made its debut in the UK singles charts at number 152. After the music video's premiere in July 2007, the single reached number 17 on August 6, 2007. Due to the strong airplay, the single rose five places to number 12, making the single Knowles eleventh top - Twenty hit in the UK. Green Light even reached top positions in the UK download charts. A CD single was also released at the last minute. Green Light was in the UK charts for a total of 9 weeks. In Ireland , the single debuted at number 46 on August 23, 2007 and left the charts a week later. The Freemasons remix of the song debuted on September 8, 2007 at number 30 in the Dutch charts . The single reached there on September 29, 2007 with number 18, its highest ranking. The song stayed on the charts for six weeks.

Music video

Melina and Beyoncé Knowles directed the music video for Green Light . In the spring of 2007, it was one of the two music videos that were recorded in two weeks for the B'Day Anthology Video Album , and the music video for Green Light is one of eight secret music videos from Beyoncé.

Kitty Kat (intro)

Melina and Beyoncé also co-directed the one-minute music video for Kitty Kat . At the beginning of the music video, Beyoncé shows simple dance scenes, with Beyoncé's face and eyes fixed, which are made up and styled to resemble a cat. Shortly afterwards, an oversized cat comes into the video, which then plays with Beyoncé and a pink ball of fabric.

The giant cat was self-constructed and is a large robot construction with a fur cover, which then becomes the giant cat and the movements. The video was actually only intended for B'Day Anthology , where Beyoncé wears even more clothes and keeps everything even hotter than in the music video for Kitty Kat , so many scenes were cut out. The entire full original music video was never released.

Green light

The music video for Green Light is inspired by Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love music video from 1985, where a woman interprets a rock star with her guitar . In the music video, Beyoncé's tour band Suga Mama has their second appearance in a music video. With Green Light , Beyoncé wanted a modern version of the video mentioned above, as she also wanted to include instruments in the video and also wanted to interpret a rock star.

Beyoncé describes the filming of Green Light as "the toughest filming time for a hot clip of mine". In the video, Beyoncé is dancing in a hot latex leather suit. Beyoncé first dances with a group of women who, after a while, roll over on the floor and later grab Knowles and interpret an orgasm . The exact same scene takes place again later with a group of men. Beyoncé's tour band Suga Mama starred a second time in this music video. The members of Suga Mama are in the women's group in the music video.
