Déjà Vu is a song by the American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles in a duet with the rapper Jay-Z . The song was produced by Knowles and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins for their second solo album B'Day . The song combines contemporary R&B with the funk music of the 1970s, the song is played by a bass guitar , hi-hat , drums and a Roland TR-808 drum machine . In terms of content, it is about a love affair between a man and a woman.

The song was released as the first single on the album in July 2006 . At the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards 2006 the song was named "Best Song". "Déjà Vu" was received mixed by critics. The song reached top chart positions in all countries and number 1 in the United Kingdom . There has been a lot of controversy from the media and press over the music video , alleging that the video contains too many hot sex scenes and is therefore not intended for the public . It was also alleged that the video inspired the teens to have sex through its material. Because of this controversy, many music networks did not air the video.

Emergence

In 2005, American producer Rodney Jerkins - who had already produced songs for Destiny's Child - worked with Knowles. The composer John Webb wanted a song "with the concept of an old school track, with drum elements", whereupon the title "Déjà Vu" should give a foretaste of the song. Webb first played the bass guitar for the song in order to create the melody ahead of time . Then the other instruments were recorded. Production took place in Jerkins Sony Music Studio in New York .

Before production, Jerkins recorded a demo of the song and Makeba Riddick was the songwriter . Then they presented the demo recording to Knowles, who was happy with the recording. "Déjà Vu" was written by Delisha Thomas, Keli Nicole Price and Knowle's friend Jay-Z . When the latter tried to record a rap version of the song, Knowles became aware of Jay-Z and asked him to rap later in the song .

Musical and thematic

"DéjàVu" is a Contemporary R & B -song with a moderate Hip-Hop - Groove . The song was composed in G minor and with a time signature . "Déjà Vu" contains funk elements from the 1970s, as well as soul and hip-hop elements. The song is played by the instruments described above. Knowles said in an interview:

“When I recorded 'Déjà Vu'… I knew I would record a new album afterwards. I really want to do an album with live instruments. The instruments will enrich my music. "

The lyrics of "Déjà Vu" are composed in a verse - chorus form. The hook is the same as in Knowles' 2003 hit Crazy in Love from her debut album Dangerously in Love .

The music video for Déjà Vu was filmed by Sophie Muller on June 21, 2006 in New Orleans , Louisiana ; individual scenes from the video were shot in the Maple Leaf Bar. In the music video, Knowles wears many different clothes that visually add to the sex controversy. The video for Déjà Vu had its TV premiere on July 12, 2006 on Total Request Live. The music video was voted best video at the 2006 MOBO Awards .

The reactions to the video were mixed. Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine compared the video to the ones on her hits Baby Boy and Naughty Girl , songs from her debut album Dangerously in Love . Knowles fans wanted the video to continue, but the others protested the video because of the too many sex scenes, especially the one between Knowles and Jay-Z. The real controversy didn't start until a newspaper posted a picture from the video of Knowles and Jay-Z supposedly having oral sex with each other. Some time later another picture was discovered where Knowles allegedly gives Jay-Z a fellatio . Due to the discussions that arose, all the music channels decided not to play the video anymore.
