Total Request Live (abbreviation: TRL ) was a chart broadcast by the music channel MTV , which first aired in the USA in 1998 and was later shown in versions produced for these markets in many other countries, such as Italy , Germany and Brazil. The German TRL version had the highest ratings in Europe, but it was replaced by MTV Home in 2009 . On October 2, 2017, a relaunch of TRL started in the USA , where actors and stars from online media are also performing.

concept

TRL's broadcast concept consists of interviews with prominent guests and the broadcast of music videos . The videos shown are selected - with the exception of new releases - by viewers on the MTV homepage or by telephone, the first ten places are integrated into the program in reverse order.

history

TRL studio in Times Square

In the United States, TRL was created from the merging of MTV Live , a music show with studio guests, moderated by Toby Amies , and the clip show Total Request , moderated by Carson Daly , consisting only of presentations and music videos . In 1999 the concept was expanded to include a studio audience, and in the same year the first offshoot was produced abroad, TRL Italy . In 2003 Carson Daly, who had moderated the show until then, ended his employment with MTV, since then several moderators have alternated.

In November 2008, the program was stopped due to low ratings. Most recently, an average of 700,000 viewers watched, while the most popular program, The Hills, reached up to 4 million viewers.

subjects

The show ran from Tuesday to Friday in the afternoon program. On Tuesdays MTV Urban TRL broadcast the most popular videos from R&B and Hip-Hop . Rock TRL followed on Wednesdays with the most popular videos from the field of rock music . On Thursday, MTV did not broadcast a genre-specific program. Prominent guests were invited to TRL XXL on Fridays .

Until April 13, 2007, TRL was broadcast five times a week. The list that viewers could choose from remained the same throughout the week. In addition, the selected TRL Most Wanted charts could no longer be influenced during the course of the program.
