Markus Kavka (born June 27, 1967 in Ingolstadt ) is a German presenter , journalist , author and DJ .

Life

Childhood and youth

Kavka grew up in Manching (Pfaffenhofen district, near Ingolstadt) with his parents and his younger brother Alexander. As a child and adolescent, he was a passionate footballer , but later believed he had too little talent for professional football. He gained his first experience in the media industry at Radio Downtown in Erlangen and at the Ingolstadt radio station Radio IN . After graduating from high school in 1987, he began studying theater and communication science as well as American studies with a focus on new media in Erlangen . During this time he worked at Radio Downtown in Erlangen and wrote first articles for music magazines and city newspapers. After his master's thesis, which he completed in 1994, after a brief orientation phase he took up a position as an editor at the music magazine Metal Hammer , for which he moved to Vöhringen.

On TV

Through his new job, he quickly made contact with the music channel VIVA . Kavka initially took over the moderation of the special interest program Metalla . Then he moderated the show Wah² . Two years later VIVA founded the 2Rock division on VIVA Zwei , where Kavka was allowed to work as a producer in addition to his now mandatory VJ job, just like at 2New . In 2000, VIVA Zwei was going to be dissolved (replaced by VIVA Plus ), but within a month Kavka received an offer from competitor MTV Germany and started work immediately.

The first months with the new employer passed productively, so that in August of the same year the MTV News project - by and with Markus Kavka - could be broadcast. From March 2001 the alternative magazine MTV Spin continued to be broadcast, in which he told for an hour about genres and bands with a lower share of the charts and presented their works. He was in charge of the MTV Music Awards , reports from festivals such as Rock am Ring and also 20 Years On MTV . The latter was planned in 2001 as a one-off event for the 20th anniversary of MTV, but after the lasting success it was reproduced and broadcast in a total of five seasons until 2004. In 2002 he moved to Berlin , where the German MTV headquarters can be found.

Since 2005 he has hosted MTV Rockzone and the program MTV Spin , which ended in December of the same year. Her work, according to Kavka in his farewell and acceptance speech to the audience, can still be observed on Rockzone and has not been exhausted for a long time. Similar to other MTV / VIVA presenters before, Kavka is now also taking on assignments from other television stations. At the end of 2007 he did a video column for the RBB Zeitgeists program Polylux . MTV Rockzone has not been moderated since October 2008 .

Markus Kavka as DJ (2006)

On January 18, 2009, Kavka hosted the program “Wahl im Web” for the ZDF on the state elections in Hesse, which was broadcast on the Internet and on the ZDFinfokanal . Kavka also moderated this program for the state elections in Saarland, Thuringia, Saxony and the 2009 federal election. In 2009 he presented the Bavarian TV Prize together with Steffen Seibert .

Kavka has been performing the program Number One for kabel eins since October 28, 2009 ! . International pop and rock stars are portrayed there through interviews, among other things. The Internet broadcast in NumberOne.web will also be extended. In February 2012 it was announced that Kavka was producing new episodes of his program Number One! from September 2012 presented weekly on ZDFkultur . In the spring of 2013, Kavka presented the series Bier on Tour on Servus TV together with “beer pope” Conrad Seidl .

Since March 2014 Markus Kavka has been moderating the new format Unicato of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, which is broadcast on MDR television every first Wednesday of the month. In May 2015 he hosted an episode of the program Update Deluxe on the music television channel Deluxe Music together with Jennifer Weist (singer of the band Jennifer Rostock ) . Since December 2015 Markus Kavka has been presenting the KAVKA DELUXE format on Deluxe Music with personal stories about selected music videos.

Since June 2015 he has hosted all broadcasts with football matches for the European Championship qualification for RTL Nitro . In July 2015 he was interview partner of Michael Kessler in whose series Kessler is… On August 1, 2015, he presented the show Wacken Live on 3sat.

On the radio

Markus Kavka joined the team of moderators at the radio station egoFM in January 2017 . In March 2019 Kavka started the digital radio 80s80s Wave, of which he is the godfather .

As a DJ

Kavka is also a fan of electronic music and has been trying his luck as a DJ more and more recently. He regularly publishes excerpts from his DJ sets on the Internet. After a break in the early years in the television business, he returned to DJing after the end of VIVA Zwei. In contrast to earlier years, in which he mainly played indie , he preferred to play house or techno . Even if it is mainly found as a DJ in Berlin and Munich, his music can also be heard every now and then in other cities, such as, but every year at the Disco Festival in Kassel or in the context of taking place in Dessau Melt festivals. In southern Germany he mostly works with VJ Herbert Dorfner.

As an author

In February 2007 his first book “Electric Toothbrushes” was published by Berlin-Verlag (columns of the portal zuender.zeit.de, for which Kavka regularly writes). In August 2008 Kavka's third book “Hamma learned something again: about growing up” was published - a self-deprecating analysis of growing up. In March 2011 his first novel Rottenegg was published by Rowohlt Verlag. The novel is partly autobiographical and describes a provincial-metropolitan scenario. Markus Kavka presented this book at the Leipzig Book Fair 2011 on the ZDF's “Blue Sofa” and in a live reading at MDR-Sputnik.

Kavka vs. The Web

Since February 27, 2009 Markus Kavka has his own show Kavka vs. The Web on the MySpace .com page . Every Friday, the presenter presented bands, musicians and people in seven minutes that he himself had discovered on the Internet and at the same time played cowboys, construction workers and superheroes in comedic clips in the everyday battle with Society 2.0. In the second season, the videos could always be viewed on MySpace from Tuesday.

The third season has been running since March 2010, in which Kavka continues to point out the absurdities of Web 2.0 in various roles. Together with his sketch partner and director Berni Mayer (aka St. Burnster), he goes through incarnations from a recluse who has turned away from the world to a hunter or a driving instructor.

The guests in the three seasons so far have been Sarah Kuttner , Nora Tschirner , Juliette Lewis , Chester Bennington , Rodrigo González , Cem Özdemir and the former MTV colleague Joko Winterscheidt , with whom Kavka also had a passionate series rivalry. In the third season u. a. Jan Delay , Dendemann , Sido , Max Riemelt and Oliver Kalkofe have their say.

For his commitment to Kavka vs. The Web (and also the ZDF program Wahl im Web ) received Markus Kavka in March 2010 the innovation prize “People Moving Media” from the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe.

In March 2008 Kavka supported the AIDS campaign "Don't forget AIDS!"

Kavka is also involved on the “ Störungsmelder ” website and writes here as a blogger against right-wing radicalism in Germany.

Private

Kavka has been married to radio presenter Babette Conrady since 2015.
